The Prince George Citizen - Thursday, May 16, 2002 - 17 Entertainment/Lifestyles Are nude slumber parties all the rage? Dear Ann Landers: I hope you can help me with an unusual problem. My teenage daughter was recendy invited to a nude slumber party. She assured me there would be no boys present. I called the mother of the girl and talked to her about this party. While the mother admitted the idea was strange, she said she would be present during the party to supervise. She also said her husband and teenage son would be away for the weekend, so there would be no males present in the house. She assured me that nude slumber parties are all the rage these days. 1 have never heard of such a thing and cannot imagine why a bunch of 15- and 16-year-old girls would want to spend 12 hours together stark naked. Any ideas? — Baffled Mom in Burlingame, Calif. Dear Mom: I’m as baffled as you are. While walking around nude may Tie an interesting experiment, and sleeping nude has long been popular, I cannot imagine the appeal of doing either with a bunch of other girls in close quarters. As long as you trust the mother of these girls to supervise for the duration of the party, I see no harm in it. Meanwhile, ask your daughter why she finds this such an attractive idea. You might learn something. Dear Ann Landers: I read the letter from “Out of Gas in Grand Rapids, Mich.,” whose wife doesn’t drive. He said he had to take her everywhere. I have a different explanation for her behavior. I suspect this woman is an alcoholic. The love of my life steadfastly refused to learn to drive. Too late, I discovered she was a secret drinker who consumed a great deal of alcohol by noon. She was afraid to get behind the wheel of a car. Refusing to drive also gave her an excuse to stay home, surrender to her depression and drink herself to death. Like “Out of Gas,” I avoided confronta- ADVICE i- • ON LIFE A ^ \ . by Ann Landers tions because I did not want to fight over something I foolishly considered trivial. Now, she is gone. The woman who wrote to you doesn’t need a bus pass, she needs an intervention. For her sake, he MUST confront her. I did not confront my wife, and 1 grieve to this day. — Missed the Signs in Memphis, Tenn. Dear Memphis: Thank you for providing an alternative explanation for the woman’s behavior. The man’s letter was less about his wife’s driving and more about her insistence on oversleeping and making him late for work. However, if there is indeed more going on, 1 hope he will discuss it with her and take the necessary steps. Dear Ann Landers: You recently printed a letter from “Lost in Washington, D.C., But Still Hopeful.” She was in her 40s and despaired of ever finding Mr. Right. You heard from a great many readers and printed their responses. Most said she should stop looking and learn to enjoy her life as it is. I agree. My husband left me after 20 years of marriage to “find himself.” When he walked out the door, I discovered how much I enjoyed life without him. I have two cockatoos who I have trained to say, “1 love you!” as soon as I come through the door. Believe me, Ann, it sounds a lot better than, “You’re late! Where’s my dinner?” — Happier Now in Virginia Dear Virginia: I’d say you “traded up.” Congratulations. Ann Landers, P.O. Box 11562, Chicago, III. 60611-0562. Mann, you recall, was executive producer of the series, which began with the phrase “MTV cops,” jotted on a cocktail napkin by NBC exec Brandon Tartikoff. The show was revolutionary in using a lot of cutting-edge pop music, and because it showed off Miami, then the coolest place in America. This project would not, of course, be an attempt to revive the stubble-and-pastel ambience of the original show, which ran from 1984 to ’89 and was completely an artifact of that period. And Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas are too old, I suppose, to star again, though perhaps they’ll take cameo roles. Instead, this new movie version would be a contemporary detective story, but still set in Miami and still ultra-cool, in a third-millennium kind of way. (My, the ’80s were a different time, weren’t they? I wonder if 1 could still find my old copy of the Glenn Frey single Smugglers’ Blues.) MILLER t ♦ + Speaking of strip-mining, Spi-der-Man creator Stan Lee says he has received not one extra penny despite the countless millions pouring in from the movie. However, Lee is full of new ideas. Instead of working for straight salary at Marvel Comics, he now has his own company, POW! Entertainment. That stands, if you’re curious, for Purveyors of Wonderment. And he has finally learned some commercial thinking, he told N.Y. Post columnist Cindy Adams: “In some stage of development is Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Femazons, which features a female lead. All ideas I came up with. High-con-cept, gimmicky, franchisable characters that can throw off toys and games. Any could become a WINFREY comic book or TV series." 4* 4* 4* The Camilli column: your one-stop-shopping source for news about Montecito, Calif: Comedian Dennis Miller has had a squabble with his neighbours in Montecito Calif., and when one guy threatened to shoot him, he started house-hunting elsewhere, reports say. Miller lives in a $14-million U.S. mansion in the ritzy town, and the locals started to get cross when he built a big ugly walls. One story says he told the neighbours that if they went to the zoning board to protest, “I’ll fight you, and I’ll win, because I have more money than you.” What a charmer! Elsewhere in the same town, Oprah Winfrey has signaled her intention to put a sign desig- Celebrities nating her $51-million U.S. waterfront estate “Tara II.” This is of course a reference to Scarlett O’Hara’s plantation in the classic novel Gone With the Wind. Her home looks nothing like the classic Southern mansion in the book and movie, but that hasn’t stopped Oprah. 4* 4* 4* Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, who won a best-picture Oscar for producing A Beautiful Mind, have just bought the rights to all the articles in the last 48 years of Playboy magazine. The idea is that some of the articles will provide ideas for new movies. “For almost 50 years, Playboy magazine has served as the birthplace of source material for numerous movies, TV shows and plays,” Grazer said. “But we think there’s still a lot of gold left to be mined from those archives.” We don’t know how much they paid, but they may have a bargain: successful movies based on Playboy articles or stories include The World According to Garp, The Hustler and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, among others. (AP) — The new Star Wars movie is hitting DVD at light speed compared with The Phantom Menace. Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones will be available on DVD this fall, the franchise’s creator, George Lucas, said last week in an interview at his film headquarters, Skywalker Ranch. Episode I — The Phantom Menace came out on videotape early in 2000, about 10 months after the film’s theatrical debut, but the DVD version was not released until a year and a half later. The reason for the delay was that Lucas was particular about refining deleted material and other DVD bonuses and was busy working on Episode II. I Lucas said he’d rather hold off on the Attack of the Clones DVD, as well, so he could spend more time tweaking Ap photo A digital scene from Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. the bonus material. “But everybody says, ‘Oh, it’s so much more powerful if you bring it out in the same year as the movie,’ ” Lucas said. “So we’re doing our best to do that.” Unfortunately for Star Wars fans, the original trilogy will not land on DVD until after Lucas finishes Episode III, due out in 2005, he said. Harry Potter sets another record, this one for first-day video and DVD sales LONDON (AP) — Wizard Harry Potter has conjured up another record. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold 1.25 million copies on its first day of release in Britain as a video and DVD, its distributor said Sunday, making it Britain’s fastest-selling video release. The film, titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in North America, will be released on video and DVD there on May 28. Warner Home Video said the film broke the record of 1.1 million sales set by Titanic in 1997. “The demand for this video has been unprecedented and the results have exceeded all our expectations,” said Neil McEwan, the company’s managing director. Some stores opened at midnight Friday to sell the video, and many reported large crowds. The release may help satisfy fans eager for more stories of the boy wizard. The fifth book in the multimillion-selling series of novels, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, had been expected to fly into shops this summer. But a spokeswoman for author J.K. Rowling said this week that she is unlikely to finish writing before the end of the year.
