Aircraft firm eyes Kelowna KELOWNA (CP) — A group of investors is making a bid to land the financially troubled Piper Aircraft Corp. in the Okanagan Valley. “The key people in Piper want to move to Kelowna,’’ said Brian Lightbum, executive assistant to A1 Homing, Progressive Conservative member of Parliament for Okanagan Centre. The investor group officially notified the bankrupt small-plane manufacturer Tuesday of their plan to put in a bid, Lightbum said Wednesday. Its presentation is expected to be made next week. Piper, based in Vero Beach, Fla., is operating under U.S. bankruptcy protection. Lightbum said the Kelowna bid will be a serious contender despite reports of a deal to move Piper to Portage la Prairie, Man. Ken Danchuk, Central Okanagan Economic Development commissioner, said a task force of city officials and people from the business, aerospace, investment and banking sectors was organized to find investors and produce a bid. Piper conducted a world-wide relocation search and chose Canada for its plant, which would employ about 500 workers. Seven provinces indicated interest but Lightbum said while other groups are relying on federal, provincial and municipal government assistance, the local group is prepared to put up a substantial amount of its own money.
