S.  P.  WELCH AND FAMILY THRILLING   EXPERIENCE
WITH FIRE ON TUESDAY
S. P. Welch and the members of his family had a thrilling experience with fire shortly after 3 o'clock on Tuesday morning. Mr. Welch had living quarters in the rear of the store and furniture shop occupied by him on Third avenue. About three o'clock in the morning Mrs. Welch was awakened by the sound of crackling wood and observed smoke coming into the bedroom from the kitchen. Mr. Welch got his wife and child out of the building at once and sent a telephone call in for the fire department. Although the partitions in the building were of beaver-board, and the fire spread rapidly, the prompt arrival of the department prevented a total loss, or the spread, ing of the flames to adjoining buildings. Insurance was carried to the extent of $1500 but the loss will be something in excess of this figure. The fire started from a spark dropped from the ashpan of the kitchen range. The building is owned by H. B. Guest and the fire loss on the same is fully covered by insurance.

Stanley Newman, an expert at the game of English billiards, and younger brother of Tom Newman, world's champion at the game, gave an exhibition at T. A. Griffith'*, billiard hall on Wednesday evening when he played four 200-point games with local men, allowing them each a handicap of 100 points. At the close of the evening's play Newman had run up his score of 800 while the locals were making 208, which with their handicap gave them a total of 608. The local men were Bruce Parker, J. D Corning, Ed. Ruggles and R. C. Armstrong. They did not appear to be in very good form. Bruce Parker played the best game, but his high runs were 23 and 17. Newman's high rums were 73 and 67, but there were several others of 40 and 30. The exhibition will be repeated m F. D. Taylor's billiard hall on Saturday evening, commencing at 9 o'clock.

A considerable number of logs have been going down the Fraser in the past few days. They are believed to be logs which were lost out of the booms of the Allen-Thrasher
company above Loos.

The   Cranbrook  Sawmill  company! is moving the site of its mill   about one   mile.       The   new  site   is  on  a lower level and will improve hauling conditions with respect to logs.

The Cariboo Lumber company is the name of a new ipawmillinG: company which it is expected will commence sawing about June 1st. The principals in the company are R. W. Alward and E. H. Burden. Their ml*" which will have a capacity of 24,000 feet per day, will be located between Aleza Lake and Newlands.
