The correspondence with respect to the joint offer made by the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific managements for the purchase of the Alberta railway was tabled in the provincial legislature on Thursday last. This offer signified a willingness to assume a debenture liability of $7,000,000 and $2,420,000 in outstanding indebtedness, and to pay $8,000,000 for the assets and physical properties of the railway within two years. The purchasing companies stipulated that the railway should be relieved of provincial taxation for ten years. No provision was made in the purchase offer for the building of the short line of railway to Vancouver. LABOR MEMBER CRITICIZES ALBERTA GOVERNMENT FOR SUGGESTED COAL TAX B.C. An effort along this line was made som* time ago but the petitioners later changed their minds and the project was dropped. The preamble to the present petition is a masterpiece in the way of setting out that the signatories are really Ane. chaps art! eminently deriving of the benefit* of ryrly clos'.n ^ regulations. The proposal is that the barber shops shall be operated from 8 o'clock in the morning until 8 o'clock in the evening on each week-day except Saturday, when they will remain open until 11 o'clock. The shops will be closed on Sundays, but on statutory holidays they will remain open until one o'clock in the afternoon. The barbers are not content with the penalties set forth in the Municipal Act for infringement of the early closing regulations. They suggest a fine for first offences, a fine and a jail sentence for the second offence, and a fine and the forfeiture of the city licence for a third offence. | The aldermen were quite prepared to go as far as they can to meet the barbers, and on* motion of Alderman Opie, seconded by Alderman Wie-land, the rules were suspended and a bylaw providing for early closing was given its first and second readings. The bylaw will be submitted to the petitioners and if it meets with their approval will be given its final reading. LEE F. His story is that the father had administered a beating to his mother, and that when she attempted to escape into the farmyard the father followed her in a threatening manner. Unable to restrain himself the son is said to have told his neighbors that he grabbed the shotgun and fired at his father at short range. The shot took effect in the heart and the elder Packer staggered into the house and died in a few minutes. The shooting took place yesterday.
