eorge Little, 77, Founder of Terrace, Dies TERRACE (CP) — George Little, -year-old pioneer of northwest inada and the Yukon, died at s home here Friday in the 10*11 named. He was born In Ontario and oved west to follow the 1898 >M trail Into the Yukon, i [n his day, he was general store )orator, postmaster, railway ireinan, proprietor of a sawmill, incr. and financier. He w*s best iwn as the man who laid out town of Terrace, which now a population or 5,000. He left the Yukon in 1905 and niled at KUirnat, how.site, oi the Aluminum Company of Canada smelter. From there he blazed a trail 40 miles back northward into the Skeena. Except for a trip through the south Pacific 30 years ago, he never left. He laid claim to thousands of acres and set about building a town. Streets were laid out 80 feet "wide and shade trees imported from Quebec were planted along with them. . - In 1909, with the Grand Trunk Pacific railway poised in Edmonton for its jump, to the west coast he set up the first BawmlU in the area. The following year he built the first store and In 1912 he went outside to Seattle and married. When the railway came through headed for Prince Rupert, he donated 50 acres of land for a station and the company named the stop Littleton. Later, when the Canadian National Railways took over the GTP and.a post office was established, the name had to be changed to avoid confusion with a Littleton in eastern Canada. It was postmaster Little who named the town Terrace. *,. In 1939 he went to Yellowknife, above the knee. CCf Parley Cancelled By Sub-Zero Weather Annual ione conference of CCF party organizations in the north-central interior, scheduled to be held In Prince George last weekend, was cancelled because of cold weather. No new ^late has been set for the conference, but it will probably be held sometime in the spring, a spokesman for the party N.W.T., to stake a mining claim. There a charge exploded prematurely, costing him his left leg stated. He said he cancelled the conference on Thursday7when he became alarmed at weather reports that a wave of sub-zero weather would descend on the city Saturday. Many of the delegates to the two-day conference would have had to travel considerable distances to reach the city and roads In some cases are hazardous. Frank McKenzie, provincial president of the CCF was scheduled to address the two-day session.
