Terrace Mil Firm Sold To Americans
TERRACE—The pioneer firm of Little, Haughland and Kerr Ltd. has been sold to Josiyn Man* ufacturlng and Supply Company of Chicago, 111., it was announced recently by Terrace partners Dudley G. Little, Christian Haugland and Duncan K. Kerr.
The well-known Interior firm started in business January 1, 1936 when the Terrace sawmilling and logging operations were purchased from the late George Little, who had founded the business in 1912.                                  .   ,
Little, Haugland and Kerr later expanded to cedar pole operations and at one time were the biggest producers of large cedar poles In B.C.
A second mill was built at Mud Lake where a camp, and several family homes were constructed.
The Terrace mill was rebuilt following a fire in 1943.
The Josiyn Klanufacturing and Supply Company known as the largest supplier of pole line equipment in North America also operates its own steel mill and foundry.

The changing complexion of the British Commonwealth was emphasized once again last week when the prime ministers of its ( nirv members conferred in Lori-don, under chairmanship of Sir Anthony \ Eden, for another of their periodic meetings. .. iWhat has been" described as the worJcVs most exclusive club decided to increase its membership. At the next conference there will be 11 prime ministers with the admission to membership of Asia's Malayon Federation and Africa's Gold Coast, both of which are about to gain independence. This means there will then be four white nations (Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand), two predominantly non-white countries ruled by whites (South Africa and the Central African Federation) and five non-white nations (India, Pakistan, Ceylon and the two new members). 'This division is natural, of course, since about 500,000,000 of the 600,000,000 people in the Commonwealth are colored. 'The prime ministers, both in general sessions and at private meetings, took several other Important steps. Britain agreed to hand over to Ceylon her naval and air bases on the island. However, she will retain facilities for communications, transportation and storage.

After a stormy debate, the lew er house of West Germany's par liament approved conscription for fhe new army over the strongest protests of the .socialist opposition to Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
The draft law, which was assured of approval by the upper house, will make 12,000,000 Ger-men men between the ages of 18 and 46 subject to compulsory, military service.

500,000-man army West Germany has pledged to the North American Treaty Organization. STEEL STRIKE
At the end of the first week of the steel strike in the United States, there were 50,000 workers in allied industries idle in addition to the 650,000 who walked out following a contract impasse between the companies and the United Steelworkers.
Most of those laid off In other industries were railroaders. The coal industry was next in line to feel the effects of the shutdown of the country's most vital industry. ;
In .Canada, few immediate effects were felt although about one-third of Canada's steel is Imported from the UjS. There was a disposition among some Canadian importers to feel that the strike in the U.S. wouldn't be permitted to last much longer. ARGENTINE ELECTION
In the last quarter of next year, Argentina will hold its fjrst election since the overthrow of President Juan Peron last "September. This was announced last weekend by President Pedro Aramburu.
He also announced that slate control of trade unions will end and the unions will soon be permitted to elect their own leaders.
In addition to elections for the president and congress, Buenos Aaires, for 15 years administered by the Interior Ministry, will again be autonomous and elect its own local government. MARILYN'S HONEYMOON

The U.S. State Department- relented last week and granted playwright Arthur Miller a limited passport —- good for six months Instead of the usual two. years— 'so that he could, go to Europe with his new wife. Miller had previously been refused a passport because he had not signed an affidavit swearing he was not a Communist He said it was merely an oversight.
