Safety director Louis Rosenberg estimated 350,000 turned out for a mammoth, welcome home party Sunday night. The celebration continued until early today. Every major office building was aglow. Traffic became so hopelessly jammed police shut off streets for blocks in the area around Gateway Plaza where a reviewing stand was set up. The celebrating began a few hours after the Bucs clinched their first pennant since 1027 —because St. Louis Cardinals were eliminated by Chicago CJubg. The fact the Pirates lost their third straight game to Mil-\vaukee Sunday didn't bother the jubilant fans. Just 11 days ago, New York Yankees were clinging to the American League lead by one thin percentage point and it was a leaky ship Casey Stengel was piloting. The Yanks had just lost two straight to their country cousins, the Kansas City As. A drastic patching job was needed witli a four-game set coming up with the second-place Baltimore Orioles. Stengel did the job, the leaks were plugged, the ship got on an even keel. The Orioles tumbled to four straight defeats and today the Yanks are the c h a m p i o n s of the American League for the 10th time in the last 12. years. Since that day more than a week ago, the Yanks haven't lost. They've won nine in a row, including the clincher, a 4-3 decision over the Boston Red Sox Sunday. To Cleveland Indians goes a large assist. The Tribe blanked Chicago, 4-0, eliminating the White Sox. The pennant is the Yanks' 25th in 40 years, a record that The Standing's PWLT FA Pt. Ralph Terry—with a one-batter assist from Luis Arroyo — pitched (he Yanks to their deciding victory. Two months ago, Tony was strictly excess baggage on the New York pitching staff. At one point, he had the dubious distinction of pitching to 11 batters, 10 of whom hit safely. Ho was untouchable from the fourth until the ninth when he yielded three singles and one run; With the tying run on third, Arroyo came to the rescue and forced Pete Runnels, the league's batting-leader, to foul out. Roger Marls drove in two Yank runs and it was Terry himself — an .OfiS hitter — who doubled home what proved to be the deciding run. Bobby Locke took care of the White Sox for Indians. He lot the pale hose down with just four hits, and worse yet, dropped them into third place behind the Orioles, who whipped Washington Senators, 3-1. Public announcement of the protest was made during a half-time television interview with general manager Herb Capozzi. Stamps jumped into a 10-0 lead during the first quarter, increased the edge to 13-7 at the half but trailed 14-13 at the third quarter mark before scoring two touchdowns for the win. Turning in exceptional jobs for Stampeders were Ronnie Morris and Doug Brown. Morris intercepted two of Randy Duncan's passes ami ran one of them 35 yards for a touchdown. Brown's fine kicking, under slightly windy conditions, accounted for two field goals and three converts. Duncan's return to action after five games on the B.C. bench was inauspicious—his were the only passes intercepted during the game. Don Stone, Morris and Gene Filipski scored touchdowns for Calgary, with Morris kicking a fourth-quarter single. Don Vide and Nub Beamer scored touchdowns for B.C. and George Grant converted both. Calgary's two games with Saskatchewan this year have resulted in a 15-15 tie—for Rough-ies only point of the season— and a 23-15 win that was not considered easy.
