did do some key punching where it counted at the plate Alou combined with Orlando Cepcda and Willie Mays who were mam cventcrs in the wild swinging fight to produce a flurry of telling hits as the Giants rapped New Yorks last place Mets 7 1 and 6 5 Sunday and protected their National League lead over the sizzling Los Angeles Dodgers relipc batted in three runs in each game collected a total of five hits scoicd three times and stole three bases And he was the clutch man in the Gi Giants ¬ ants winning four run rally in the eighth inning of the second game He singled in Mays and Cepcda then came around with the clincher on a wild pitch a steal of third and a passed ball Cepcda had five hits one RBI and scored four When the dust settled the Giants had their fifth successic victory and the Citizen Sports Editor QUESNEL The Williams Lake High School track and field team pulled off the biggest upset in inter school competition history Saturday when they won tho 44 cvcnt North Central District High School Track Meet by a little better than six points over Prince George Final decision on their victory was made known 20 minutes after the officials had declared Prince George champions and the track at West Qucsnel was cleared except for a handful who waited for official word With the final race the 8S0 senior boys relay ended thun thunder ¬ der and spots of rain forced offi officials ¬ cials to get things over with in a hurry with the result they be believed ¬ lieved Prince George to be win winners ¬ ners as they held a slight edge NEW WINNERS In order to beat the oncoming storm official congratulations by R Hanna District Superin Superintendent ¬ tendent of Schools District 28 were hurried and winners left jubilant while Williams Lake somewhat dejectea as they had done a terrific job rushed from the field and headed for cover It was 20 minutes later that official statisticians declared the Lake winners with 16816 points with Prince George second with 162 and one sixth The victory was pulled out by way of the relay races all won by the Williams Lake team which were not tabulated until after the cheering and the multi multitude ¬ tude had faded from the scene Quesnel High School placed third with 136 and one sixth points followed by Cariboo High 52 100 mile House 44 and Wells Barkervillc 4 A GREAT RACE The final race of the day was one of the greatest as Williams Lake and Qucsnel battled down to the wire with the Williams Lake fleet footed Garry Bird pulling away in the final 10 feet to help his males win the 880 relay Although Prince George run runners ¬ ners came up with some specta spectacular ¬ cular performances it was pint sized Max Barnes that won the hearts of hundreds of spectators for his mile victory for senior boys CRACKS RECORD Setting an early pace Barnes never let up in the field of six as he burned the track up cross crossing ¬ ing the finish line in an inter school record time of 443 16 seconds better than the previous recoid Harold Johnson also of the local high school kept pace with Barnes for most of the way and breezed home in sec ond place with a time of 4475 to also better the previous rec record ¬ ord It was a race that had spec spectators ¬ tators standing at the sidelines cheering as they sensed that the record would be smashed For Barnes it marked another step toward greater heights in the mile event OTHER RECORDS Johnson broke the 880 senior boys record of 2156 when he came home winner In a time of 265 Piere Mybroc cam within two tenths ot a second of equalling the 880 for junior boys when he finished in 218 6 Val Davis again performed like a champion as she shatter shattered ¬ ed the record of 78 10 in the discus for junior girls with a toss of 97 feet She then went out and tossed the shot put a new event in the meet a dist distance ¬ ance of 33 11 for a record In another new event 120 yd hurdles for junior boys Hcdley Smeck came home winner to establish a mark Ray Stafford established the mark of 507 for the junior boys mile In what was considered an upset Stan Kellet won the 220 senior boys with a time of 25 6 to take first place In the long jump Allan Gilchuk was winner with Bruce Lofting placing sec second ¬ ond Grant Phillips captured the high jump with a leap of 54 but fell short of the record by one and one half inches Other first place finishes for the
