put pen to paper until you arc almost good enough at French or Spanish to fool the natives The tape recorder is oust ousting ¬ ing the textbook in the most modern language classes In conjunction with projected slides or film strips it is the basic mechanism of the lang language ¬ uage laboratory a system comparatively new to Brit Britain ¬ ain but used widely in France Russia and the US Britains first full scale lan language ¬ guage laboratory has been operating for just over a year at Ealing Technical College in west London So far it has only provided instruction in French but a recent 2G000 grant from the Nuffield Foun Foundation ¬ dation will enable courses in Spanish and German to be developed The audio visual system used at Ealing originated at UNESCO headquarters near Paris and was later developed by the Centre dc Recherches ct dEtudcs pour la Diffu Diffusion ¬ sion de Francaise CREDIF at Saint Cloud BASIC VOCABULARY Known as Voix et Images tie France it teaches a basic pre recorded on the master track of the tape At the same time on the screen a synchronized film strip puts the spoken pass passages ¬ ages into visual terms After each recorded sen sentence ¬ tence there is a pause while the second track of the tape comes into play The idea is for the student to repeat the sentence into his microphone imitating as closely as pos possible ¬ sible the speed and intonation of the teachers voice PRONUNCIATION AID The students voice is re recorded ¬ corded on to this second track and when the tape is played back he hears both tracks as one and can compare his confidence in speak speaking ¬ ing and enables a slow pupil to regulate his own speed of work without holding back the rest of the class Meanwhile the class super supervisor ¬ visor at her control panel keeps tab on the progress of each student by a simple monitoring device At the flick of a switch she can listen in to any cubicle without the occupant being aware of it give individual
