would give him a hundred dol dollars ¬ lars with the advice to go out and get a job and come back and see him again Jack was a queer mixture at times generous with his money and at others very tight de depending ¬ pending on his mood On one occasion he lured me into a two handed poker game by sav ing If I cant get vou to buv whiskey perhaps I can take jou for a ride in poker I never could play poker but I decided to take him on It was one of those times when no thing could go wrong I could draw to anv thing and catch This riled Jack who accused me of being a poor poker play player ¬ er and having only blind mans luck When I was five hundred dollars ahead he offered to cut the cards for double or nothing I told him that I didnt think he was much of a plajer himself but agreed to cut Jack won and his good humor icturncd immediately uazcuun was a goou lime sports town having a hangup hockey and baseball team Black Jack appreciated all the business that sporting events brought to his hotel but was very slow in contributing to the support of our teams There were three hotels in Hazelton from 1910 12 Pea- vine Harvey ran the Hazelton which he leased from the own or and paid off a stiff rent Pea vine was a great sport and sup ported the local teams gener ously HEADS LIST In 1912 we planned a big July 1 sports day and a committee was appointed to raise the ne necessary ¬ cessary funds A lits of hotels stores and restaurants was drawn up to canvass Peavine Harvey headed the hotel list with a donation of 500 J N MacCormick manager of R C Cunninghams store who was also president of the Athletic Club came through with 250 When the hotel list was shown to Black Jack he started to curse Peavine Harvey Well I said he gave up 500 thats all we care about and Black Jack not to lose face came through with 500 Our scheme did not work with Jack Seely of the Omineoa-IIo-tel who said heres 50 thats all jou are going to get This thriftyness paid off vv ith Sealey as he was the only hotel keeper who wound up in Hazelton with a full pocket When the New Hazclton town site was put on the market in 1912 Bob Kelly the promoter built a big hotel and Black Jack took on the operation of it It did a fair business for several years until railway construction was finishing off and the river boats had left the river forever and business melted away Then came 1914 and the war and most of the business in town folded the hotel along with the rest This was Black Jacks last hotel venture although he still owned one at Telkwa Jack stajed around the valley for a few years then he went south possibly back to Victoria his first venture I have often thought of his wonderful ring with the big ycl low solitaire diamond and won wondered ¬ dered whatever became of it The Prince George Office of
