Its Big Big Business Three pulp mills are schedul scheduled ¬ ed to be built In Prince George One Prince George Pulp and Paper Company Ltd Is well along with Its 84 million 800 tons per day mill Northwoods 65 million mill started later but Is advancing rapidly and had the silk hat distinction of being the first to receive chips for eventual pro processing ¬ cessing in its plant A third mill Intercontinen Intercontinental ¬ tal still is in the tentative stage although a pulpwood har harvesting ¬ vesting area has been allocated to It Intercontinental is a com company ¬ pany formed by Prince George Pulp and a German firm Feld muhle A G Its initial proposal was for a 600-ton-per-day mill to be built at a cost of 65 million on a site adjacent to Prince George Pulp Its entire output had been spoken for in advance The photo story on this and the preceeding page deals en entirely ¬ tirely with PG Pulp as its more advanced construction permits the reader a better idea of what Is involved in these tremendous projects Putting together an 84-mil-llon pulp and paper plant is a complex task And when it is a Joint venture of Canadian Forest Products in Vancouver and the Reed Paper Group of London England additional complica complications ¬ tions creep in For example some of the engineering for the new mill was done in Vancouver some in England and some in Quebec where the principal Canadian subsidiary of Reed is Anglo Canadian Pulp and Paper Mills Limited in Quebec City In one month a teletype mes message ¬ sage machine In project eng eer Les Hempsalls office han handled ¬ dled 1500 messages sent and received And a duplicating machine copying documents and engin engineering ¬ eering drawings turned out 15 000 pieces of work in the same month Hempsall calculates the ma machine ¬ chine will turn out up to 250 000 copies before the job is over In Eastern Canada and other centres around the world ex expediting ¬ pediting companies make sure that ordered materials turn up In Prince George on the date they are needed or find re replacements ¬ placements for equipment unavoidably delayed Its Just like an army organ organization ¬ ization says Hempsall Its a tremendous big job just to keep It going When you consider that the plant must be ready to accept machinery ordered a year and a half ago for delivery on a cer certain ¬ tain date youcan understand the problem Construction Is mostly on tithe The weather hurt us a bit and some heaters we ordered didnt work out We are Just getting them going now But engineer Hempsall es estimated ¬ timated last month constructioi work Is 40 per cent complete about on target for the May 1966 start up of one productlo line and July 1966 start up oi the other He holds a weekly schedul scheduling ¬ ing meeting with officials o Marwell Construction the gen general ¬ eral contractors Work schedulesforeveryurlt of the giant Job are drawn up with such-and-such a unit to be for example 80 per cent com complete ¬ plete by the following week Its important that the build building ¬ ing Is ready for mechanical work to start on schedule he explains If were three months be behind ¬ hind a year from now It will be Impossible to catch up the dif difference ¬ ference In three months Last month the first and most vital part of the mechani mechanical ¬ cal Installation got underway That is the laying down of the sole plates for the huge paper making machines They must go down dead level and engineers and workmen spend days adjusting each plate on tie down bolts with shims Once set the rest of the machinery will be Installed piece by piece An overall view of the Prince George Pulp and Paper Company Ltd plant now under construction across the Nechako River from Prince George Two taller structures are the recovery boiler building and that housing the mills kiln Some idea of the perspective is given by realization the boiler building is 16 stories tall The mill warehouse will be capable of storing up 8000 tons of pulp in yard square sheets and 4000 tons of paper Completion date is scheduled to be one year from this month NORTHERN DAIRIES PRODUCTS I FTjiWTivrV3 m ZZizffiJ
