sal salmon ¬ mon Industry are clouded by the threat of a fishermens strike The United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union is asking three to four cents more a pound In the minimum rate paid for salmon The B C Fisheries As Association ¬ sociation representing eight major packing firms says it cannot offer more than the rates paid in 1964 Negotiations began April 28 and union representatives say not one lota of prog ress has been made Assuming a strike can be averted the fisheries as association ¬ sociation predicts a 1965 wholesale production value close to the 92000000 re recorded ¬ corded last year The all time high was 98000000 in 1958 The last strike of B C salmon fishermen was in 1963 when they were off the seas for three weeks The union estimates fishermen lost 3000000 In that time and the fisheries associa association ¬ tion places gross wholesale value lost at 20000000 This year the union Is ask asking ¬ ing for three - cent Increas Increases ¬ es to 14 cents a pound for pinks to 15 cents for chums and to 39 cents for sockeye and a four cent increase to 30 cents a pound for cohoe These figures would con constitute ¬ stitute a minimum to be paid by the packing companies The rates could be raised by Individual packers if there were a shortage of fish The figures usually apply only to salmon taken by net fishermen Those caught by hook and line spring and cohoe fetch prices of up to 75 cents a pound because better handling allows them to be sold fresh or frozen Salmon caught in gillnets or seine nets are canned Laurie Appleton Randy Apple ton Judy Warrick Gall Morgan
