IlMHr Will MR AND MRS ERIC DITMARS -W D Wett photo jTakegOJ with mmf wLl i I BETTY CONNER T m I As an average housewife I suppose I meet the average number of door to door sales salesmen ¬ men They come and they go year after year and after a while you begin to see a certain pat pattern ¬ tern in their -approach There are the Question Askers They begin their sales pitch by asking if you are in favor of Motherhood or Better Communities or Cleanliness or some such thing Well it should be fairly obvious by the number of little heads circulating around the place that whatever my current opinion on the mat matter ¬ ter may be I must certainly have been all In favor of mother motherhood ¬ hood once or twice or Or he will seat himself on your best chair and begin filling out a questionnaire that will reveal whether or not yours is a happy home and you are a leader In your community Never fear you always pass this test And after he has discov discovered ¬ ered that you are a smash hit as a happy homemaker and a community leader to boot he will decide to place in your home never sell you an enormous something -or -other so that when all the neighbors see It there they will want one too Sometimes they base their whole approach on whether you believe In higher education or happiness or love your chil children ¬ dren In any case the solution should be a simple one You should look him right in the eye and declare that Motherhood is a vastly over -rated female occupation you are against higher education and any form of happiness and think that your children are a herd of savage monsters and yours is such an unhappy home that none of the neighbors ever visits your YOU can tell him that I have never been able to do it So you can see why It was a highlight of my life when last week I sent a salesman from my door not only salesless but before he even began his speech I have a bad habit of calling out Come In whenever someone knocks on the door And this was how this salesman got through the door So Round One goes to him Madam I have a Christmas present for youM he said There he had made his first blunder For anyone who men mentions ¬ tions Christmas to me In Sept September ¬ ember Is just asking for trouble Then with a flourish he un unfurled ¬ furled a plush tapestry dis playing some rare blue eyed deer gamboling beside a very blue lake surrounded by green green trees under an unnatur unnaturally ¬ ally blue sky I had to blto my lip to keep from laughing when he asked Isnt that beautiful What can you use it for I asked It makes a beautiful bed bedspread ¬ spread he assured me The thought of a whole herd of deer cavorting over m ana anatomy ¬ tomy all night was enougli to make me return to my cheek biting activities I then explained to the man that we were so poorly paid that the luxury of such a bedspread was bejond our means And I proceeded to give him such a vivid description of our plight complete with graphs and statistics that he stopped in mid sentence and never started again For a while I was afraid he was going to give me the tapestry He didnt Instead he just packed it away in its box and left saleless and speechless Womans WorW Miss
