e itizen MUSIC TRAIL Jerome Rose has won nine important awards in seven years taken Europe by storm and now at the age of 28 has set out to conquer his own country Born in Los Angeles in 1938 he began to study the piano at the age of four and made his debut with the San Francisco Symphony when ho was fifteen After graduating as Bachelor of Science from the Mannes College of Music in New York where he was a pupil of Leonard Shure he studied for one summer with Rudolf Serkin at the Marlboro School in Vermont For follow following ¬ ing four consecutive summers he studied and performed at the Aspen School of Music in Col Colorado ¬ orado In 19G1 he obtained his Masters Degree at the Juilliard School of Music also receiving the Morris Loeb Award the schools highest award for ex excellence ¬ cellence During the same year he was able to chalk up two more spectacular successes a Ful bright Scholarship for study in Vienna and First Prize in the International Busonl Competition in Bolzano Italy He has his own views inciden incidentally ¬ tally about the pros and cons of winning awards There is a danger in suddenly catching the spotlight by winning a world competition he says Iveseen outstanding talents go into a rush of engagements for one year because of winning a contest A strain like that is too great People need to learn that artists arent race horses each trying to beat the others out What is important for them is to develop solidly over a length of time and not start with a short crash car career ¬ eer and then get stuck in anany mlty This exactly what he for him self has been doing since 19G1 he has systematically built up a reputation in Europe concertiz ing several months each year and playing as soloist with leading orchestras He has appeared in Italy Norway Sweden Holland Germany Switzerland Austria and England In London as a matter of fact he has become quite popular In the Spring of 19G4 he played in Albert Hall before 7000 people and has re returned ¬
