Europe and to record with the orchestra for Angel Records Debost will tour Russia and Japan with the group next yeaV and with them will record the Vivaldi flute con concertos ¬ certos Debost was born In 1034 of an American mother and a French father Ho began to play the flute when he was 10 years old He graduated from the Paris Con sr uory in 1954 at the age of vt with two First Prizes u - ute and in Chamber Music Since then he has won first prizes in Moscow Prague Munich Ge Geneva ¬ neva and Rome has appeared as soloist with the major European orchestras under renowned con conductors ¬ ductors and has given several hundred Duo recitals with pianist Christian Ivaldi that have won standing ovations everywhere He has participated in most of the major music festivals in Europe including Salsburg Aix en Prov Provence ¬ ence Menton and the Anspach Bach Festivals Last April 196S Debost came again to the United States to ap r pear as solist with the Munich Bach Orchestra for concerts in New York Washington and Bos Boston ¬ ton A shoit tour to the West Coast at the same time included a De-bost-Ivaldi concert in Vancouver BC at the Queen Elizabeth Play Playhouse ¬ house and both Vancouver news papers were lavish in their praise One headline was FLUTE PIANO CAPTURE CITY AUDIENCESS FANCY and the other headline was RARE MUSI MUSICAL ¬ CAL TREAT One reviewer said and we qjote in part It was a remarkable concert in many ways First of all M Debost is one of that fine little band of magnificently schooled wind players He plays with a fine degree of command and the Instrument is very much an ex extension ¬ tension of himself In the idyllic Debussy Syrinx ho pulled delicate and filagree sounds from his instrument and played with them before the audiences eyes Debost has a couple of unique fluto players tricks and they are astonishly beautiful When he pulls the sound back in the mid middle ¬ dle of a phrase it is wondrous ly effective and when ho echoes his already melllflous sound In a mystical sotto voco it is ut utterly ¬ terly magical Ivaldi at the keyboard was no less effective There were mo moments ¬ ments when a brittle and sensitive touch he simulated the harpsi harpsichord ¬ chord which was missing from both the Vivaldi and the Bach Ivaldls technical command was vital to the prog rams success The unusual program captured the listeners fancy r uoWo
