book brilliant In spots but generally disorganized and not particular particularly ¬ ly Inventive In short a dis appointment after Cohens poetry and his earlier novel Tne Fav Favorite ¬ orite Game Before the book appeared this spring the publishers general message was that It would prob probably ¬ ably be prosecuted as obscene This hasnt happened yet although It may still be prosecuted or proscribed somewhere for the book Is full of sexual events and fantasies But Beautiful Losers differs from other books of recent noto rlety such as Henry Millers novels or fanny Hill In that its sex has none of their sense oi fun For Cohens puppets they are too thin to be characters sex may be ecstatic Beautiful but they end up as hopeless Losers The book Is a kind of sexual cats cradle between an unnamed professor his wife Edith his friend FaSatanlcMPwho jumps into bed with both Edith and the non hero and a historical per personage ¬ sonage Catherine Tekakwltha a 17th century Iroquois Christian Among these four people and a few stray outsiders such as Hitler now a bell boy in a South American hotel almost any per version is possible There are good passages in Beautiful Losers as there cer tainly ought to be since Cohen is one of Canadas best young poets and has been writing seri ously for a decade But the book as a whole Is incoherent Any general philosophy is self-contradicted by its despair Considered formally the novel is a mess too It is divided into one long and two short parts each different In style This dif difference ¬ ference is confusing and the reader cannot find out why Cohen insisted on it although it must have been Important to him Perhaps every writers second novel is a disappointment Whether future readers will find the good passages of Beauti ful Losers worth the trouble of digging them out is anyones guess Literary scholars being what they are some of them have already begun work on Cohen who is only in his early 30s An American university is col collecting ¬ lecting his manuscripts and a Canadian literature student pro proposed ¬ posed to write an MA thesis on Leonard Cohen but was dissuaded by his professors THE BACKWOODS
