soccer rodeo professional boxing sky diving and canoe racing offer a pretty varied menu as the Elks Club puts on its biggest May Day show yet But today faithful few well deal with boxing and softball Dont ask why thats just the way they came out of the hat The annual May Day Softball Tournament starts tonight at 645 but the committee room maneuver maneuvering ¬ ing that took place right up until Thursday would make a United Nations meeting sound like a tea pai ty Heres the way it went going back as far as January The Columbus Hotel Club now known as Crossroads Okeefes was suspended by the British Columbia Amateur Softball Association because the club participated in the world tournament at Rock Island 111 last year a tourname it run by the rival International Softball Congress The BCASA then discovered they couldnt suspend the club because it hadnt joined the BC body in 1966 Columbus was the i politely informed that they werens sus suspended ¬ pended merely ineligible to play in ASA competi competition ¬ tion this year The BC body later backed off and said the players who went to Rock Island could play if each player posted a 25 bond with the association Two days later word came from the coast that it would have to be a 150 bond per player and would have to be handled through a bonding firm This they said was lo ensure there d be no hanky panky The problem affected four local clubs and the Everett Washington team affiliated with the ASA informed the Prince George league they wouldnt be able to come to the local tourney unless all players were affiliated Back to the bonding company At any rate its all done now but its a hell of a note to be foiced into telling somebody in Vancouver how much mo ley youve got in the bank and to get four chaiactei references just to play a game of amateur softball Now to tho boxing card details of which can be found above Although not actually a part of the Elks weekend activities the card promised to be one highlights of
