Monday nights at 1030 pm suffers from hav having ¬ ing too many visual effects aimed at creating a roaring 20s at atmosphere ¬ mosphere It is a tribute to the quality of the band that the sound is able to overcome the distractions and come through with total effect Harrison Is good but his sides sidesmen ¬ men are better Don Clark whose trumpet style Is reminiscent of Bobby Hackett and trombonist Ian MacDougal steal the show With players like these no props are needed The music by Itself evokes the mood of the 20s Song of the Serpent opens Sat Saturday ¬ urday night in the Secondary School Field House A childrens play based on the history of Barkervllle acted by an equity cast the play should be well worth taking the chil children ¬ dren to see The production Is being pre presented ¬ sented on Holiday Theatres own portable stage which Is being set up so the audience will sit on three sides of the stage In line with contemporary thought on Childrens theatre The play is set in a town somehwere on the Fraser in 1866 and the plot revolves around missing gold mines gold thieves claim jumpers and all the other lngredlants of a rousing western Betty Lambert author of the play is one of BCs most crea creative ¬ tive authors She wrote the successful TV plays The Return of a Hero Prescription for Love and SThis Side of Tomorrow In the cast is Don Crawford who has made a name for himself as a recording R and B singer in San Francisco and Victoria nd who has acted in the two Vancouver produced Paul St Pierre plays How to Run the Country and Skoklam this year I Other members of the equity cast are Leo Burdak Owen Foran Robert Graham Jane Heyman Jim McQueen Ray Ml chal Gregory Reid and Pla Shan del The Hut opens Saturday night at 502 Second Street C Manager Gerry Danhauer is letting the Elks Club use the building for the opening night to hbld the May Day teen dance n Music will be supplied by the Totem Land Five one of the top teen bands In western Canada If no unforseen problems crop up the Hut will be remaining open seven days a week starting the end of the month with a juke box for the daytime and most week nights and live bands on the weekends A promoter has been lined up to bring in outside entertainment and intends to reach as far afield as Montreal and San Francisco for bands The Bent Ear coffee house will re open a week tonight In the basement of the Knox United Church on Fifth Avenue the Bent Ear is operated by uni university ¬ versity students who return here for the summer Last summer the coffee house provided a wide variety of folk singers Friday and Saturday nights The audience was composed of the late teen and early twenty crowd which the organizers hope to be catering to again The Bent Ear will be open from 9 pm to lam Friday nights and 9 pm to midnight Saturday nights On the band wagon The city band was scheduled to play this weekend in the May Day parade but now finds It cannot The uni uniforms ¬ forms did not arrive in time At the Canton Inn Bill Pal fenier and The Inn mates will be changing their sound soon Bill has arranged with sax player Bert Noakes who played at the Tiki Club which closed six months ago and who has a reputation for blowing cool Jazz to join The Inn mates three nights a week A schedule has not yet been set up but he can be expected to be appearing in the band next week BUI is also looking for a sing singer ¬ er preferably female to Join the band Plans are being considered by one group in town for a psy chedllc film show A number of modern films have been chosen but the problem
