ERIC N1COL Three years ago I bought a new car and the manu manufacturer ¬ facturer hasnt called it In yet Other Dig Three Pro Products ¬ ducts have been called In for various faults but not mine Whats wrong with It Am I being discrimi discriminated ¬ nated against Is the mal malfunction ¬ function too gross to try to correct The suspense Is getting to me Every week I read In the newspaper that 1967 Belch fires In the number of 85- 000 have been callled In for a minor fault brake fail failure ¬ ure under certain conditions such as putting the foot on the pedal or 11 2000 Tor Tortillas ¬ tillas 1966 model have been summoned back to the shop for removal of a fifth wheel that slipped past the Inspec Inspectors ¬ tors About my car nothing This Is making me feel very Insecure The immedi immediate ¬ ate fillip to my anxiety is a noise that has developed In the steering wheel a kind of squeaky raspy noise when I turn it Mice I suspect something which becomes potentially dangerous In cer certain ¬ tain circumstances such as turning a corner The day after my body Is found in the wreck of the car that failed to negotiate a slight curve all cars of this make and year are called In for adjustment Is that how the gods have set the agenda9 Ive asked my service sta station ¬ tion attendant what the noise in my steering wheel might be I dont know he said but theyve all got it If theyve all got it why arent they being whistled back to the womb The car Is not an expensive model 1 admit A compact Could It be that the manufacturer has written me off as ex expendable ¬ pendable An accident hap happening ¬ pening to anybody cheap enough to buy this car can be viewed as Natures way of controlling a scrub species By George and by Walter Reuther I demand that my car be recalled We toohave our rights who buy only regular-grade gasoline Why should only the wealthy be privileged to run around in jan executive type courtesy car while their own auto automobiles ¬ mobiles are being treated for a congenital weakness In the transmission fluid I hate to bring up the matter of status In a fam family ¬ ily publication of this kind but It is a fact that to be seen driving your own car these days marks you as a drone One of my neigh neighbors ¬ bors buys a new car so frequently that we never see him riding In anything but a taxi His cars shoot forth and back to the dealer as If on a yo yo string You cant mention a factory fresh fault he hasnt owned and he also lists an Impres Impressive ¬ sive collect Ion of hand tooled European goofs It is Just barely possible that I have bought a make and year of car that has no built in bugs Nothing In my past life however lends credence to such an assump assumption ¬ tion The same angel watches over me that worked on the Edsel No Im pretty sure that one of these days as I am haring along at full throttle the steering wheel will come free In my hands and I shall know that modern assembly-line methods and the miracle of todays technolo technology ¬ gy have got me too by the small follicles BUDGET STRI KES SPACE PROGRAM CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP The brilliant success Of Rus Russias ¬ sias Venus IV comes at a time when budget cuts have hit the United States future lnterplane tary hopes for several years The congressional cuts heav heavily ¬ ily opposed by many scientific groups may force the US to take a permanent back seat While the United States had no plans to soft land a space craft on Venus as Venus VI did Wednesday she had hoped to land two unmanned Project Voyager laboratories on Mars in 1973 and two more In 1975 to study the planet extensively In Including ¬ cluding a search for life Cuts In the National Aeronau Aeronautics ¬ tics and Space Administrations fiscal 1968 budget request have delayed the first double Mars shot until at least 1975 Also eliminated was a preliminary scouting mission to the red pla planet ¬ net by a smaller spacecraft In 1971 The US Mariner V will pass within 2500 miles of Venus today to make scientific meas measurements ¬ urements At 540 pounds It was not large enough to carry a landing capsule Venus VI weighed 2438 pounds Each Voyager would weigh more than 20000 pounds The United States has two re maining Mariner craft both of which are to be launched to pass near Mars during the 1969 launching period No other shots are planned before 1975 If then Mars moved Into position as a target every 25 months and Venus every 19 months Supporters of Project Voyager note that Russia has missed only one of these launching op opportunities ¬ portunities since 1960 emphasiz emphasizing ¬ ing the vigorous Soviet plane planetary ¬ tary program Congressmen said an over all 500000000 cut in NASAs budg budget ¬ et was necessary because of the rising cost of Vietnam and na national ¬ tional programs TODAY IN HISTORY Oct 20 1967 q The Egyptian fleet of the Ottoman Empire was destroyed by combined British French and Rus slan fleets at Navarlno Greace 130 years ago today In 1837 The action was In support of the Greeks fight ing the war of Independence that began in 1821 but the powers did not formally declare war A land attack on Turkey by Russia fol lowed and eventually mod em Greece emerged though not without a civil war and agitation against the first king Otto I 1884 The first issue of La Presse was published at Montreal 1952 Typhoons killed more than 1000 people In Indochina and the Philip pines First World War Tifty years ago today in 1917 German forces cap tured the Island of Senile den In the Gulf of Riga the British Mesopotamlan force began an encircling move ment northwest of Baghdad and drove the Turkish forces across the Diala River Canadian Pacific Airlines Announces New Winter Schedule in effect October 29v 1967 Complete detailed schedules now available at lar larger ¬ ger planetary program than the US This Is not Just a stunt This Is a solid sophisticated scienti scientific ¬ fic achievement The reaction came from Dt Bruce Murray assistant profes professor ¬ sor of plenatary sciences at the Uktir V California Institute of Technolo Technology ¬ gy and a member of the team which Investigated findings of US spacecraft which flew by Mars In 1965 To me Murray said the most Impressive thing Is that the Instrumented capsule survived in both temperatures a re reported ¬ ported 104 In the atmosphere and 465 on the ground as long as It did It will be even more Im pressive If they are able to turn the capsule on again Another scientist Dr Albert Hlbbs of the Jet Propulsion Lab Laboratory ¬ oratory said the reported tem temperature ¬ perature range indicates the possibility of life Is very dim But he added that the report the atmosphere was about 99 per cent carbon dioxide does not rule out life plants love it Praise for the feat came also from Vice President Humphrey in his capacity as chairman of the National Aeronautics and Space Council Humphrey Issued a statement In Washington saying the land landing ¬ ing shows the world another Impressive example of their In Intense ¬ tense interest in space in plane planetary ¬ tary exploration In paitlcular and In technological experi experiments ¬ ments Friday October 20 1967 CHILD HEALTH
