Mile House and District offers closely connected well - planned communities that combine the best of town and country living The econ economy ¬ omy of this region is secure and expanding It is based on lumbering ranching mining farming and a rapidly growing tourist business The area is served by School District No 27 and a large modern High School in 100 Mile House provides ex excellent ¬ cellent education to Grade XIL Students are brought in by bus from the outlying areas and dormitory facilities are available All the small com communities ¬ munities have elementary schools 100 Mile House is known as the friendliest town in the Cariboo It covers a trading area of over ten thousand people and the population is expected to triple over the next six years The homes and businesses of 100 Mile House are serv serviced ¬ iced by BC Hydro Inland Gas 100 Mile Water Utilities and a complete sewage dis disposal ¬ posal system The town also has a volunteer ambulance brigade 100 Mile District General Hospital opened in 1066 has modern facilities and is well staffed and there are four highly qualified doc doctors ¬ tors and a dentist in the town All of the other facilities are here too from hotels to hardware stores service sta stations ¬ tions to supermarkets A graded serviced gravel air airstrip ¬ strip 2400 feet long The biggest industry at 100 Mile House is logging and lumbering The three largest operations located within three miles of town are inte integrated ¬ grated forest operations con consisting ¬ sisting of sawmills planer mills studmills and a plywood plant These companies em employ ¬ ploy over 300 people But the main attraction of 100 Mile House is its people They have formed a true community and have created many service and recreational groups such as the Chamber of Commerce Lions Curling Ski Snowmo Snowmobile ¬ bile 4 H Flying and Bad Badminton ¬ minton clubs the Outriders a Minor Hockey League Cana Canadian ¬ dian Legion Softball League and a Hospital Auxiliary Fifteen miles north of 100 Mile House you round a gentle curve In the highway pass a ranch and there it is blue and sparkling in the sunlight Its Indian name is most ap propriate Pretty Waters It has many fine beaches and excellent tourist accommodation The community of Lac La Hache acts as a service centre for the resort facilities and industries in the area It is serviced by BC Hydro and Natural Gas Lac La Hache is an active alive spot It has a Board of Trade a community club Elks Club and groups for hockey soccer even pot pottery ¬ tery There is alsoa historical museum at Lac La Hache In July hydroplanes from all over the country roar at the famous South Cariboo Re Regatta ¬ gatta Forest Grove is 14 miles east of 100 Mile House It is one of the oldest communities in the area and has a com community ¬ munity hall a licenced Legion Hall a curling and skating rink and a new eight room school Today Forest Grove is keeping abreast with the rapid development in this area with a new and enlarged water sys system ¬ tem and new housing develop development ¬ ment Lovely Canim Lake is one of the most popular lakes in this district 23 miles long surrounded by evergreen hills and featuring a beautiful 70 foot waterfall The lake offers varied accommodation from rustic fishing camps to lodges with full American Plan Farms in the area produce excellent carrots cabbages and potatoes Brynnor Mines Ltd with their mine and mill situated at the 5500 foot level on Tak omlane Mountain Indian name for Big Timothy Mountain has built a modern towns ite on the shores of Hendrix Lake 56 miles east of 100 Mile House The area south east of 100 Mile House has some of the largest guest ranches in the Cariboo One of them has its own nine hole golf course A favorite drive for travellers on the Cariboo Highway is to take the turn off at 70 Mile House past Green and Watch Lakes to Bridge Lake then back past Sheridan Lake Lone Butte and Horse Lake return returning ¬ ing to the highway at 100 Mile House Old Alexandra Lodge One of the most expensive two lane roads ever built in North America the Fraser Canyon Highway No 1 carries thousands of cars in a hurry They switch across the new Alexandra Bridge and lit literally ¬ erally fly by an historic lodge at Chapmans Bar Do they realize what they are passing History is deeply embedded in the Alexandra Lodge and nrcny are the changes it has seen since mule and oxen teams made their slow tor tortuous ¬ tuous way up this same Can Canyon ¬ yon It is believed that Alexandra 60 kinds of fish There are more than CO dif different ¬ ferent kinds species and sub subspecies ¬ species of fish In the fresh waters of British Columbia Some such as salmon are of great commercial impor importance ¬ tance some such as the trout and char are of great Interest to the sportsmen and indirec indirectly ¬ tly of very considerable econ economic ¬ omic value Others such as many of the minnows and coarse fish are of no direct value but may serve as food for other more valuable creatures all are oi importance in studying and measuring the wildlife re resources ¬ sources of British Columbia Reprinted from the BC Motorist Lodge still functioning today as a small store lodge and dining room is over one hun hundred ¬ dred years old The lodge is north of Spuz- zum where hardworking min miners ¬ ers mostly Chinese searched for gold on the flats in 1861 They encamped at Chapmans Bar where Alexandra Lodge is located This bar was named afteran early miner most likely the discoverer of that particular gold source A photograph by Fred Dailly BCs famous early photographer taken in 1868 shows a two storey frame house with a verandah on the east side of the old wagon road with a barn to the northeast This was variously called Chapmans Bar House or Alexanders 14 Mile House as a WL Alexander was the first man to hold land above the Alexandra Bridge The first Alexandra Bridge was one of the wonders of the western world It was built of wood and coiled wire the first susiiension bridge west of the Rockies in Canada and nam named ¬ ed after Princess Alexandra of Wales This engineering mar marvel ¬ vel was replaced in 1926 and now a third bridge bears the name Tha Old Brigade Trail pass passed ¬ ed close to the lodge and traces may still be found a few hundred feet above the lodge When the new highway was built much of the land surrounding Alexandra Lodge was lost and in 1952 the gov government ¬ ernment moved the building back 16 feet and put it on a cement foundation Now the lodge instead of standing guard over the canyon and woods frowns at the passing traffic but offers the same welcome hospitality that must have greeted the weary tra travellers ¬ vellers of 1868 The building is of two-by-six lumber never put through a planer and square nails have been used in the ori original ¬ ginal part It is nestled in the fir pine and maple trees and overlooks the famous canyon and the mountains beyond A small bridge crosses a little stream to the north and there are cabins in the back some sometimes ¬ times rented to hunters and fishermen Two small ancient fenced cemeteries are locat located ¬ ed a little to the south one overgrown has moss covered stone monuments the other unusual iron crosses Although you get the feeling of being high up in the canyon the altitude is the same as Vancouvers Little Mountain The scenery is both wild and fascinating and there are many opportunities to steep yourself in the lore of the can canyon ¬ yon You may sit on the com comfortable ¬ fortable chairs of the old fashioned porch gaze at the colorful beds of nasturtiums surrounding the lodge breathe the sharp clear air and watch the modern pack trains zipping by Once mile post house 100 Mile House came Into being in 1862 as one of the original mile post houses that were built as public stopping places along the Cariboo Wag Wagon ¬ on Trail and named according to their mileage from Lillooet Today 100 Mile House is a flourishing well - planned community centre for the fam family ¬ ily vacation 100 Mile House is right in the centre of the lovely lake country of the Cariboo This is an area of over 1500 sq miles speckled and slashed with lakes threaded with streams and surrounded by mountains Fishing There are hundreds of good spots to choose from The lakes are well filled with fight fighting ¬ ing Rainbow trout Kokanee a land locked salmon Lake trout and Eastern Brook trout Fishing is year round in the 100 Mile House area and many a good catch is taken through Mile House most lake resorts offer facil facilities ¬ ities for boat launching dock docking ¬ ing water skiing and have good beaches for swim swimming ¬ ming Sailing is rapidlygrow ing in popularity Winter sports Visitors come to 100 Mile House in every season of the year The gentle rolling land landscape ¬ scape makes exploring by ski snowshoe or snowmobile easy and popular Another big attraction is ice fishing particularly on Lac La Hache This large lake is right beside the high highway ¬ way and the fishermen simply drives his car onto the ice to his favourite spot Here he can jig through the ice which is 18 to 24 thick to getagood catch of Kokanee or maybe a large Char Other activities There are many other ac activities ¬ tivities for you to choose from in this lovely lake region There is toboganning hiking photography especially dur during ¬ ing the autumn when the as aspens ¬ pens turn gold and rock hounding Its a great country for the artist Have you ever skated down
