12 THE CITIZEN Friday July 24 1970 First summer Birds eye view of BC interior Although a good many people living in the area like to believe that they are northern residents a glance at a map of British Columbia will reveal that we are in reality in just about the middle of the province From the same map this would appear not much more than a bewildering array of lakes and rivers with an isolated dot or two to indicate any habitation A thoroughly uninteresting chunk of geography it would seem But that is just the impression a map might give you and it is completely wrong There is only one way to really see this vast area and that is from a plane Not one of the arm chair cruise at 30000 feet tea-coffee-or-milk type of air aircraft ¬ craft but from a small three or four passenger float equipped machine with a darn good pilot who knows not only what he is doing but where he is To me the latter is most important Although blessed with a fair sense of direction on the ground in the air I become hopelessly confused after a very short while A few weeks ago I had an opportunity of taking a real good look at some of the finest untouched real estate I have ever seen With Jack Savage of Culchoe Nu Lodge and Ed Macpherson of Northern Mountain Airlines at the controls we took off from Stuart Lake after breakfast and headed north I had flown the immediate area before winter and summer so at least for the first little while I was able to get by bearings Trembleur Takla the Nation Lakes up over the hills to Sustut and Bear Lake beautiful country but then as we crossed the Omineca there was a change The valleys grew smaller mountains higher Sheer rock faces dropped thousands of feet to end in a rocky jumble of shale and scrub timber Tiny lakes of in incredible color nestle in patches of snow long alpine meadows criss crossed with little streams of melting snow water and an occasional larger lake quiet as yet untouched with perhaps a feeding moose along the shore On the high meadows an occasional herd of caribou probably never hunted by man showed little concern at the presence of the noisy intruder from the air Mile upon mile of moun mountains ¬ tains and lakes And what lakes A persistent head headache ¬ ache thenight before and the roll and pitch of the plane had my stomach churning and Ed dropped down on a placid little lake so we could stretch our legs Fifty feet from shore a fresh moose trail was worn a foot deep in the muskeg On a little knoll an old caribou horn lay bleached in the sun Almost at timber line the mountains seemed to drop into the lake After the roar of the engine the silence was startling Half an hour later we were off again now swinging eastward and the same panorama of lakes Another landing this time with spinning rods at the ready we cast into the mouth of a little creek Standing on the shore the little lure arched out You could see it 50 feet away in the clear water For our brief efforts we landed three fat rainbows and Ed connected with a beautiful Dolly Varden weighting about eight pounds Firm fieshed hard fish that fought like devils as you would expect from that cold water Back homewards as the evening shadows length lengthened ¬ ened we flew down the Rocky Mountain trench and the ugliness of Lake Williston After the untouched beauty we had seen the lake with its debris and raw earth shoreline was an affront to mans intelli intelligence ¬ gence and a monument to his apparent inability to develop unless he would first destroy i It was a trip I will long remember not just for the beauty of the country but for the fact that all too probably and if present policy continues none of us will have too much longer to enjoy Major league baseball Birds top Royals 20th time in row By
