stops on the tri city racing circuit A large group of Prince George stock car racers and fans helped the Williams Lake club get its season started Sunday afternoon There were 16 cars on hand nine modlfieds and seven super stocks and seven cars were from Prince George The 16 drivers put their cars through 80 laps In seven races on a cold showery day PGARA driver Bert Prest was fastest In the super stock time trials with a clocking of 19 4 seconds on the narrow rather unusual oval Lloyd McLennan president of the Lake City Auto Racers was quickest in the modified time trials running past the watches In a quick 16 4 PGARA super stock driver Joe Sabatino who worked all last weekend In an unsuccessful attempt to make the PGARA opener won two of three races In the super stock class The only other double winner was Quesnels Doug Larson now driving the old Uncle Bens Special campaigned last season by Prince Georges Al Belanger Single wins went to McLennan Prest and Quesnels Dave Peebles Sabatino In competition for the first time with his 361 cubic inch Dodge powered out of the pole position to take the checkered In the super stock trophy dash Haven Cook was second and Bert Prest third Larson came from the second row to win the modified dash crossing ahead of McLennan and Williams Lakes Richard Robert Sabatino made It two in a row In the super stock heat after an excltlngdlce with Quesnels Gordon Glesbrecht who finished second ahead of Prince Georges Ed Delorme whos doing wonders as a rookie driver In a clalmer class car McLennan gave the home town fans something to cheer as he won the 10 lap modified heat Bob Magee of Williams Lake was second and Brian Green of Prince George third For Green it was also his first time In action with an Impressive looking modified that used to be driven by Larry Sproule of Langley The super stock 20 lap main event was one that Sabatino would like to forget quickly but Prest will long savor Sabatino built what appeared to be a comfortable lead and eased up a bit after the halfway point But Prest was steadily gaining Prest appeared content to settle for second coming out of turn four and charging for the line But Sabatino looked back and saw a car he didnt expect to see over cooked the corner and bit and went out of shape enough to let Prest take the closest win of the day Should 1 be mad or happy asked Sabatino In the pits later Are you sure you arent the ball seems to be the question asked by the Northwood player at left as he appears to be directing a kick at a Labatts United player during North Cariboo Soccer League opening action at Rotary Stadium Sunday Actually he has just booted the ball out of view There was no confusion on the part of Labatts as they took advantage of inept Northwood to the tune of 12 0 In other games Interior Traders downed Toltec 5 1 and Kickers defeated Centennials 6 2 From May 19 to June 4 Festival of Sports will be busy again The third annual BC Festival of Sports is just around the corner with much to see and do for participants and spectators in the Prince George area During the first festival in 1970 there were just four events listed for Prince George Last year that total grew to some 20 events and this year there will be at least a dozen The festival covering two weeks and three weekends runs from May 19 to June 4 As is usually the case the busiest time by far will be the holiday weekend this month The co ordinator of events in this area is Lome Houston pres president ¬ ident of the 1972 White Spruce Winter Carnival Committee Events during the first weekend of the festival include the annual Northern Hardware Isle Pierre Canoe Race May 21 a bantam lacrosse tournament the popular soap box derby May 21 and 22 a four day 10 team senior B softball tournament May 19 to 22 a regional tennis tournament May 20 to 22 stock car racing at Williams Lake May 20 and 21 and at the PGARA Speedway here May 22 a doub doubleheader ¬ leheader motorcycle races May 20 and 21 and two parades the annual Elks parade on the holiday Monday and a Saturday parade as part of the Kinsmen convention The annual spring horse show is set for the next weekend May 27 and 28 There are three events set for Many nights to sell Orr MINNEAPOLIS A P Wren Blair recalls spending many evenings in Bobby Orrs home at Parry Sound Ont talking hockey and making his sales pitch Blair then a Boston scout was convincing Orr now a National Hockey League su superstar ¬ perstar to sign a Junior A amateur card that would com commit ¬ mit him to the Bruins organi organization ¬ zation I pretty near moved into the Orr residence for two years recalled Blair now general manager of Minne Minnesota ¬ sota North Stars When Bobby was 14 1 signed him to Junior A card to play for Osh awa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior A series In those days it was strictly salesmanship said Blair Scouts were like insur insurance ¬ ance salesmen We all had a policy to sell with almost the same divi dividends ¬ dends It was whoever could talk in the living room the best Blair is still making a per persuasive ¬ suasive s3les pitch with the North Stars Already he has signed all but three of his NHL players for next season virtually shutting out the new World Hockey Associations chances at acquiring a Minne Minnesota ¬ sota player That doesnt mean the other three arent signed ei either ¬ ther said Blair I dont think any other NHL team is even close to the number of players I signed said Blair who has signed a new three year contract him himself ¬ self the festivals final weekend highlighted by the Associated Canadian Travellers annual rodeo June 2 to 4 which is going professional for the first time Other final weekend events are an age class swim meet at the Four Seasons Pool June 3 and a provincial archery com competition ¬ petition June 3 and 4 The popular loggers sports will not be part of the festival here this year but they havent been forgotten The Prince George committee plans an exhibition sometime prior to their big annual show Aug 12 and 13 as part of the annual Prince George Exhibi Exhibition ¬ tion There will be some 60000 up for grabs for loggers throughout the province this year and the Prince George show with 5000 in prize money is the second lar largest ¬ gest in BC behind the Pacific National Exhibition During the festival of sports there are three loggers sports events at least one of which is expected to attract Prince George area loggers They are in Port Alberni May 21 Victoria May 22 and Terrace Canadian amateur boxing lightweight championship The 132 pounder won the Western Canadian title in Calgary last month then awaited news of the East Eastern ¬ ern Canada champion de decided ¬ cided during the weekend The rumor was the east eastern ¬ ern winner would likely be Canadian champion Jose Martinez a member of SEPT ILES Que CP Montreal fighters won five of the 10 weight division titles Sun Sunday ¬ day at the Eastern Canadian amateur boxing championships Among the Montreal victors were Ian Clyde who took the 105 pound class from Luc Mal tais of Sept Iles by decision Leo Sauve who captured the 119 pound class by decision from fellow Montrealer Richard Doutre and Paul Collette who also defeated a Montrealer Yvan Macteau to take the 125 pound division by decision The other caused a hatf hour delay before the 20 lap modified and the car Is going real good I just blew it son put his foot Into it and built a big lead to win easily For the second consecutive race Bob Magee and Brian Green finished second and third A four car 10 lap race for B modilieds only was won by Quesnels Dave Peebles with Garnet Grimard of Quesnel second and Richard Robert of Williams Lake third The most distant visitor was Doug Bowell chairman of the BC Oval Track Co ordinating Committee who pulled his modified all the way from Nanalmo to have a look at how things are shaping up on B Cs newest racing circuit The cars are back at the PGARA Speedway this Sunday with time trials at 1 pm and racing an hour later The May holiday weekend will be the biggest and noisiest ever for stock cars in the Central Interior with no less than four shows on the three days On the Saturday and Sunday there Is racing In Williams Lake and on the Holiday Monday there Is an afternoon and early evening doubleheader in Prince George Quesnel is set to pave its track and will become the third stop on the tri city circuit June 4 Sports Canadas Pan - American Games team last summer and a member of the Cana Canadian ¬ dian team which toured Europe last fall along with Prince George heavyweight and Canadian champion Jack Meda The rumors were right Martinez won the eastern title and his bout with Di Associations pre season tournament last week and came out with a record of two wins and no losses but they managed to win by only a slim one goal mar margin ¬ gin each time The Labatts Blues and Colum Columbus ¬ bus Macs both stayed within striking distance through both games Just as the teams were evenly matched the scoring was evenly distributed among the three teams The Blues had seven players in the top 19 scorers the Stylers and the Macs each placed six players on the list In the top 10 bracket of the scoring race the Stylers had the upper hand with four players mentioned while the Blues and the Macs each had three All three teams got into the top DBenecefto 1 wins9 Jose three as Stylers Grant Skipper headed the list with nine goals and five assists for 14 points Macs Al Mottishaw When Bobby Orr Is going right hes very very good More than 17250 New York fans reluctantly agreed Sunday afternoon when Orr pulled all the strings In steering Boston Bruins to a 3 2 victory over the hometown Rangers The Bruins hold a 3 1 edge In the Stanley Cup final and will have home Ice advantage Tues Tuesday ¬ day night for the fifth game of the National Hockey Leagues best-of-seven final Game time is 730 p m EDT But it may have been a costly victory Orr named the leagues most valuable player and out outstanding ¬ standing defenceman stopped a shot with his already Injured left knee early in the second period The knee began to swell Im Immediately ¬ mediately I dont know whose shot it was Orr said later In the dressing room Someone later identified Pete Stemkowski as the Ranger who pulled the trig trigger ¬ ger I was just doing what a defenceman is supposed to do I got in front of it said Orr The young defenceman plagued by injuries to the same knee through most of the sea season ¬ son wasnt hobbled by the ail ailing ¬ ing leg in the first period when he struck for two quick goals and engaged Rangers Brad Park in a wrestling match It was a misunderstanding he said of continued to show a weakness on close In shots On Orrs first goal and the short handed score by Marcotte the veteran goaltender commit committed ¬ ted the sin of going down to cover the shots In both cases the players placed their drives high Glacomin had no chance on Orrs second goal a 30 foot blazer that caromed off one of the crowd of skates in front of the New York goal There was some doubt as
