CITIZCN - Thmsdny July 0 1972 - 13 Hazelton once had 403 people By Marj Gray Citizen Staff Reporter HAZELTON Village population 387 It used to be 403 but we lost a few since the last count village clerk June Larson pointed out Thats the official census figure Mayor Perry York dis disagrees ¬ agrees with the figure The official census is not in yet he insisted and the closet population figure is about 400 It really doesnt matter who is right The village of Hazelton is still one of the tiniest incor incorporated ¬ porated areas in the pro province ¬ vince It became a village in 1956 and is the oldest of the three Hazeltons New Hazelton and South Hazelton are both unincorporated areas There are probably over 1000 people in the old Hazel Hazelton ¬ ton area 60 per cent of this number are Indians The Hazelton band reserve land hems the village in along the river creating one of the smallest villages in the area as well as population in the province In 1950 there were about 11 acres in the village Mayor York said The Indian people surrendered 44 acres of their reserve land but not all of it was purchased The present village covers probably about 20 acres he said But York is looking at land along Highway 62 which runs from the village to the Yel lowhead Highway A new lulingwill allow the village to develop land along the highway he said This could push the total land in the village to 176 acres right up to the Yel- lowhead By the year 2000 the mayor predicts the three Hazeltons will be united in one district municipality Ive been here since 1967 Do you exist Ifyouhaven tbeenenumer ated does it mean you dont exist7 Notnecessanly theprovin cial voters list isnt complete yet The enumeration of eligi eligible ¬ ble voters in the Fort George electoral district is about 75 per cent complete Prince George government agents M Carhngsaidhehas had about 50 enumerators working in the district for the past month If you were on the 1968 vot voters ¬ ers list and youre still living at the same address you probably wont be bothered by an enumerator But they are supposed to call on other people If resi residents ¬ dents are not at home they will leave a card to be com completed ¬ pleted and returned to the enumeration headquarters The voters list is not closed when the enumerators com complete ¬ plete their calls so that those who have been missed or who for one reason or another do not fill out a card can still have their names added The actual date when the list will be closed will be given plenty of publicity in the various news media said Carling when the
