COLEMAN By Jim Coleman PRAGUE Team Canada came within lour seconds of withering Its hard won International hockey laurels on Sat urday night Fortunately at 1950 of the final period Serge Savard who had been knocked to his knees holed a three foot putt to give our side a 3 3 draw with Czechoslovakia Followers of the Canadian team have become accus tomed to last minute heroics since these hockey excursionists switched their after burners In Moscow last week However they were cutting things too blinking fine for comfort on Saturday night They staged such a breathless melee in front of the Czech net that a few misguided commentators in the distant Canadian press section believed that the tying goal had been scored by Jean Paul Parlse one of at least four gentlemen who had been swinging at the whimpering puck When the tumult subsided reporters followed Parlse to the Canadian dressing room to congratulate him What are you talking about said Parlse surprised but pleased by all the attention which suddenly was being lav lavished ¬ ished on him I didnt score the goall Serge shot It Into the netl Serge Savard Is an habitually successful horse bettor and In the manner of all race track habltuees he Is unimpressed by anything less than a winning 50-to-l shot Accordingly he was becomingly calm when reporters deserted Parlse and turned to Savard Congratulations on that goal a reporter burbled Which goal Serge answered amiably I scored two goals tonight True Earlier Savard scored the first goal of the game on a hard slapshot from the left point at 819 of the opening period Well the winning goal said the reporter slightly taken aback How did you happen to score it I just shot it into the net said Savard who doesnt get excited easily The reporter wasnt going to give up easily Scratching his nose with his ball point pen he persisted Was there anything peculiar about the way you scored the goal Well lets see replied Savard I was on my knees in front of the net Does that sound unusual to you A bit unusual the reporter acknowledged When you were on your knees how far were you in front of the goal crease About three feet answered Savard It is not a very difficult shot from such a distance Now that its over and Team Canada has gone home with the pelts of the Russian bears packed in their luggage I would like to say that I believe that it was a very lousy idea to play a hockey game in Prague AFTER winning that thrilling series in Moscow I think that it was a great idea to bring the Canadian team to Prague to have a holiday in one of the worlds truly interesting cities But it was stupid to book a hockey game in the Czechoslovakian capital If they wanted to play a hockey game in Prague why didnt they come here BEFORE going to Moscow Whoever conceived that brilliant idea of taking the Canadia hockey players to Stockholm for a week had rocks in his head The Swedes dont really like Canadian hockey teams and that week in Stockholm almost culminated in disaster in the Johanneshov Ice Stadium No one really minds being tied 3 3 by Czechs But that 4 4 tie with Sweden on the night of Sunday September 17 was the low point of this entire slightly ill timed hockey venture If Canada gets around to sending another hockey team across the Atlantic Ocean in the foreseeable future they should schedule a series in Prague and they should forget about Stockholm and Moscow for a couple of years These Czechoslovakians are the worlds most enthusiastic hockey spectators In the big Prague ice palace on Saturday night they began cheering and shouting at least 10 minutes before the teams came on the ice for the pre game introduc introductions ¬ tions There was a small and noisy Canadian delegation in attendance mostly youngsters who were attending a youth conference but the Canadian cheers were drowned by Czech whistling Team Canada could have used the support of some of those Canadian roisterers who were left behind in Moscow I suppose that a 3 3 draw was hailed rapturously by the average citizen of Prague and it would be hailed too in diplomatic circles Czechoslovakians profess to have a liking for Canadians particularly because Canadians invented ice hockey Nevertheless it would have been a black eye for Cana Canadian ¬ dian hockey if after winning gloriously in Moscow our team had been beaten 3 2 in Prague by a Czech team which had been practising for only three or four weeks In retrospect Serge Savards goal on Saturday night was almost as important as some of those third period goals which were scored by Paul Henderson in Moscow Harry Sinden had to make a difficult decision in Prague a decision which almost left Canadas team a bit too thin to cope with the Czechs However Sinden wished to give some of the substitutes who have stuck with the team since training camp opened on August 13 a chance to play in at least one game behind the Iron Curtain Accordingly Harry benched some of the players who had been highly instrumental in Canadas wins over the Russians He benched Paul Henderson Ron Ellis Pat Stapleton Gary Bergman Bill White and Rod Gilbert Another player who had been prominent on Moscow ice Guy Lapointe flew home directly to Montreal from Russia While I have great respect for Ken Dryden and Tony Esposito personally I was disappointed when Eddie Johnston wasnt given an opportunity to play goal in this last game in Prague When a couple of reporters offered commisserations to Johnston Saturday night he had difficulty in hiding his own disappointment He said with considerable emotion in his voice I wouldnt have come if Id known that I wasnt going to play at least one game over here Im going to go home for a while Im not even going to the Boston camp for a couple of days At the moment I dont want to think about hockey Another Canada player who overheard the conversation said Thats a damn shame There goes one guy who really came to play Hes the kind of guy whod stick his bare head in front of the puck to stop it if necessary Okay its all over Lets spend a while savoring the win before we gt around to second guessings and recriminations Viewed ir the wider perspective almost
