defeated the Boston Red Sox 3 1 Tuesday night to win the American League east title The Tigers play the west division champion Oakland Athletics starting Satur Saturday ¬ day for the leagues World Series berth In the National League the defending series champs the Pittsburgh Pirates play the Cincinnati Reds Both are best of five playoffs with the World Series due to start Oct 14 Hawks cuts start The cuts have started at the Prince George Mohawks training camp There were 36 Hawks hopefuls on the ice for the second training session at the Coliseum at 7 pm Tuesday Before the players left the ice under the watchful eye of playing coach Bob Brooks at 10 pm there were less than 30 Brooks said before the practice he planned a few cuts and wanted the squad size cut to about 25 by the end of this week The club had five prospec prospective ¬ tive goaltenders on the ice Monday and after Tuesday there were four remaining The best prospects for the two spots appear to be vete veteran ¬ ran Don Wilkie who led all goaltenders in the Cariboo Hockey League last year Wally Denault 25 a graduate of the Kamloops Rockets of the BC Junior Hockey League who played two sea seasons ¬ sons with the Cranbrook Roy Royals ¬ als of the senior A Western International Hockey League and Andres Dyr blom 21 a quick moving Swede who has been in Canada just a year Before making any cuts Brooks said he wanted to have a good look at all the prospects We have more young faces than last year and this is something I dont want to overlook said the rugged left winger who finished third in the CHL scoring race last season The ice problem which forced players off after just an hour of light skating and shooting Monday was solved Tuesday and the ice was in much better shape as Brooks ran the club through a three hour practice to make up for Mondays lost time The first half featured a scrimmage with Brooks requesting no body contact But there was some hitting and things got just a bit rough at times with a few sticks car carried ¬ ried high A scrimmage on the second day of camp rarely shows much It was certainly not polished and there were few goals scored although several veterans stood out particularly defencemen Ray Hamilton Mike Jenkins and Glen Yelland along with big centre Larry Vander Graaf Missing from the camp is smooth centre Bill Bell the CHLs scoring champion the past two seasons Bell is out of town and will miss the first week of practice Rugged winger Jeff Row Rowland ¬ land is nursing a leg injury He suffered a serious injury in the 1971 lacrosse season had an operation then got back onto the ice late last sea season ¬ son The leg was hurt again this lacrosse season and Rowland hopes he wont have to face another operation Hell spend the rest of the month slowly trying to build the strength up again before making any decision to face the knife again After the scrimmage and a brief break Brooks put the players through some shoot shooting ¬ ing and one-on-one rushing drills The club is on the ice between 7 and 9 pm Monday to Friday and 1 to 3 pm Sun Sundays ¬ days They have exhibition games against the defending regular season and playoff champion Quesnel Kan Kangaroos ¬ garoos here Tuesday and in Quesnel next Thursday They play the University of Alberta Golden Bears from Edmonton here Oct 27 and 28 and may possibly play two more exhibitions if they can be arranged by club officials The Hawks along with the Williams Lake Stampeders and the Vanderhoof Bears will supply six players three forwards two defencemen and a goalie for the CHL all star game against the Kan Kangaroos ¬ garoos in Quesnel Nov 1 The Mohawks open their 42 game schedule at home Nov 4 against Quesnel and face Williams Lake here the next day Among the younger faces in camp this year several of whom are bound to be around for awhile is yet another Rota this one 18-year-old Brad the brother of 19-year-old Darcy who is in his last year of junior with the Edmonton Oil Kings Brad played junior with Crosstown Motors in Edmon Edmonton ¬ ton last year an Oil King development club He skated with the junior Prince George Spruce Kings at the Kin Centre Monday then turned out with the Hawks Tuesday The youngster who has good size looked good in the scrimmage and could have a chance if he doesnt decide to try for a spot with the Spruce Kings The Mohawks who can sign 19 players and dress 16 for any one game including two goaltenders have just 11 vet veterans ¬ erans back from last years second place club With Gord Cruickshank retired because of business commitments Wilkie is the only holdover in goal There are four defencemen back Hamilton Jenkins Yel Yelland ¬ land and John Leslie The two returning left win gersare Brooks andRowland with Bell and Vander Graaf back at centre and Mike Meehan and Mitch Olineck at right wing So just to ice a club Brooks will need anothergoaltender one player for each of the three forward positions plus a possible fifth defenceman There will definitely be a new look to the club this year and Brooks has made no sec secret ¬ ret of the fact hed like to have some top youngsters to go with the veterans a combina combination ¬ tion which worked extremely well for Quesnel last season Seasons tickets for the Mohawks 21 home games are now available at the Coliseum during regular business hours Hockey fans picking up their tickets before the home opener can save themselves 10 per cent on any three price ranges Centre section seats this season will cost 175 or 3675 for the season 3310 with the 10 per
