Br i sorts N7 BY RON ALLERTON Who are these upstart Old Stylers Theyve got a lot of nerve winning the BC senior B lacrosse championship After all the New Westminster Blue came here last year and won it and they expected to do the same thing this year They also expected to be in Halifax today in search of the Canadian championship Well they arent The Old Stylers are to the surprise but not total amazement of almost everyone connected with lac lacrosse ¬ rosse in BC In recent years teams have been coming here from the coast for provincial championships and mostly its been a lark for the visitors A nice trip north a chance tohave some fun away from home and an easy victory in whatever provincial championship happened to be on the line The time has come for those cocky coast clubs to take notice Prince George athletes arent going to roll over and play dead anymore The Stylers gave us a hint last year when they refused to co operate by losing two straight to New Westminster Later with ice covering the lacrosse floor at the Coliseum a young bunch of hockey players dug into their bag of Mohawk magic and found enough to beat the Fraser Arms Canucks for the BC intermediate A hockey championship Now the Stylers are continuing the new Prince George tradition They lost the first game to New Westminsterbut came back to take the final two and at 515 pm our time today they play their first game in the Halifax national tournament The Stylers have a mixed bag of players who can take and hand out the rough stuff with anyone and beat you with baircontrol and accuracy One of the biggest reasons they were the class of the North Central Lacrosse Association this season is because they took much better advantage of their opportunities than the other clubs They have a goaltender Dave Yellow Brick Wall Jenkins who got his first tate of stopping rubber as a hockey netminder They have several players who started playing the game as early as 14 - playing coach Al Watt There are no less than seven of the 21 players with experience in the excellent coast leagues Gord Jakubec Lloyd Soleman Skip Mint Al Lawson Earl Hughes Geff Frketich and Tony Ciolfitto There are several veterans with up to seven years in Prince George lacrosse Barry Williams Ron Howard Ryan Collins and Art Hill A few of the youngsters are Prince George minor sports products and as well known for hockey as they are in lacrosse Mike Mushins Gerry McMullen and Jeff Rowland all of whom are on their second BC championship teams of 1973 after playing for the Mohawks f There are some young legs picked up from the Labatts Blues and Mr Mikes Northern Sabres Vern Norbraten Neil Mcintosh Butch Stewart Daye Fulks and John Wagner Behind the scenes is a capable hard working execu executive ¬ tive Tommy Gubbels trainer Jim Butterfield Gord Henry t Jim French Doug Moffat and Wayne Collins There are also a lot of sports minded Prince George people without whos help the Stylers might not be in Halifax At times we are critical of Prince George people for not supporting various sports In this case everyone who made a donation to the Stylers travel fund no matter how small deserves a pat on the back Its this kind of support that guarantees a bright future for this type of sports achievement here We wish the Old Stylers well Whether they win it all really doesnt matter just getting there is a major accomplishment But you can bet they wont be the last Prince George team to reach a national final Baseball standings American League National League East East W L Pet Gbl W L Pet Gbl Balti
