Broadbent quits BCR top spot VICTORIA CV Premier Dave Barrett president of the British Columbia Railway Tuesday announced the res resignation ¬ ignation of J S Broadbent as general manager and vice president of the railway Mr Barrett said Mr Broad Broadbent ¬ bent resigned for health reasons The premier said Mr Broadbent will continue to work for the provincial gov government ¬ ernment as a consultant to the department of transport He will continue to receive the same 35000 annual saU ary in his work for Transport Minister Robert Strachan who is responsible for the BCR said Mr Barrett at a news conference Mr Broadbent is under his doctors care Mr Barrett said and has been ordered 4not to attend stress situa situations ¬ tions He is to work at his own pace until his health returns The premier said he didnt know what his illness was only that it has occurred in the past There will be no change in railway policy the premier emphasized in making the announcement He said Mac Norris currently vice presi president ¬ dent in charge of day-to-day operations will assume Mr Broadbents responsibilities in research and develop development ¬ ment and will also take over the general managers job Downtown expansion indicated The recent reopening of the Shasta Cafe 363 George St is noted in the latest business licence report from city hall as evidence that the eastern part of the downtown core is now contributing to an expanding economy in Prince George The George St restaurant closed for several years was renovated and reopened for business last month at the same time that city developer Gordon Bryant was getting his Block 149 redevelopment scheme into high gear Bryants company Fort George Land Co Ltd was retained by the city in August to co ordinate the redevelop redevelopment ¬ ment of the depressed George St area With George St playing its part in the over all business boom in the city the licence department statistics show that 2269 licences issued to Oct 31 have generated fees totalling 273989 to date This is about30000 less than the total for the same period last year when 2035 licences were issued Eighteen new businesses including the renovated cafe started up in October This is eight less than the total for October 1972 However the total licence revenue for the month 1847 is about 3000 more than last years total indicating that while the number The provincial govern government ¬ ment owned Canadian Cel Cellulose ¬ lulose pulp mill has dropped its appeal against the citys tax assessment City assessor Hal Aldcricc said the appeal against the assessment was lodged in March on grounds of economic obsolescence three months before majority interest in the firm was bought by the provincial gov government ¬ ernment The city had pre previously ¬ has come in earnest with more than 15 inches of snow dumped on city streets during the past week and many residents are irate because their streets werent cleared within a few days of the first snowfall Telephonclines to city hall Tuesday were plugged with complaining calls as badly as many streets were plugged with snow All the switchboard girls could tell the callers is what city engineer rural parents By Bill Graham Citizen Staff Reporter Stepped up winter busing of students has been put off indefinitely and parents from a rural area are up in arms over what an official describes as a critical shor shortage ¬ tage of bus drivers School district spokesman Stu Drinnan said today that no drivers can be found for the buses and the winter schedule which should have started Monday has been postponed Meanwhile a delegation of angry Miworth Otway parents descended upon a school board meeting Tuesday to demand action on their two month old campaign for improved service to the rural area The groups spokesman said the bus runs are over overcrowded ¬ crowded and dangerous and that one bus loaded with chil children ¬ dren was forced to back down Cranbrook Hill Tuesday after failing to make the grade The group had appeared at an earlier board meeting to demand an additional bus because children were forced to sit in aisles and spent long hours away from home due to the scheduling One parent asked This thing has been dragging on for two months now Why hasnt anything been done The parent was told the dis district ¬ trict has been unable to find a driver for an additional bus The repeated claims of over overcrowding ¬ crowding led trustee Chuck Truscott to propose a day-by-day head count be taken on the bus and the results reported to the board Drinnan said the driver shortage
