Student teacher Karin Neilsen helps Prince George elementary pupils decipher leaves and vegetables seen through a microscope Teacher training here has personal approach By Bill Graham Citizen Staff Reporter The teacher training school opened here this fall by Simon Fraser University takes a good idea and makes it better So says Linda Kaser Cannon one of two faculty associates who direct 26 stu student ¬ dent teachers enrolled in the satellite program SFU has always stressed the value of teaching practice but the new Prince George prog program ¬ ram is the most reality based that the university has offered she said Students spend two or three days out of every week work working ¬ ing in elementary classrooms during the first four months of the year long program In this way they apply almost immediately the knowledge they pick up in theoretical ses sessions ¬ sions We never get too far from the reality of the classroom here Mrs Kasar Cannon said it keeps you really hon--est The extended teacher training program is one of four being offered by SFU this year outside of the Burnaby Moun Mountain ¬ tain campus Others are in Kamloops Kelowna and Ver Vernon ¬ non Under the universitys reg regular ¬ ular program students spend six consecutive weeks of the first semester in school class classrooms ¬ rooms then two months of continuous on campus work In Prince George they mix theory with practice teaching for two or three days of every week in the first semester then digesting some more theory We are very flexibile here Mrs Kaser Cannon said Because there are only 26 students there is a tremend tremendous ¬ ous opportunity for them to design their own programs We have a program from Monday but if most wanted something different we could adapt That is not so easy in Vancouver Many of the students are second year graduates of the College of New Caledonia while others have been qual qualified ¬ ified for years but were unwil unwilling ¬ ling to leave Prince George to take their training Nine of the 26 students are married to local practising teachers Everyone is enthusiastic This is the way it should be said student teacher Cam McCormick When you learn something you can put into effect right away Karin Nielsen said she likes the practical experience of getting kids to do things and learning to see things through their eyes The program is still small enough that everyone can crowd into one living room for frank discussions This has created an esprit de corps mis missing ¬ sing at the university There is a lot of industrial attention here they wouldnt get at SFU said the faculty associate There are two of us to 26 of them In addition we have professional staff from the university visiting reg regularly ¬ ularly for one two or three day workshops They have two video tape port-a-packs to work with It is a very high quality program The university works closely with the College of New Caledonia which has offered Fuel supply good OTTAWA CP - Motorists and householders who shi shivered ¬ vered a year ago at reports of a threatened winter oil shor shortage ¬ tage have little to fear this winter say energy officials The outlook for supplies is bright they say and no prob problems ¬ lems are foreseen unless the Arabs unexpectedly turn off the oil spigot as they did last year Compared with a year ago we are in a good position said Energy Minister Donald Mac donald in an interview A sur survey ¬ vey we made shows high inven inventories ¬ tories a good supply situa situation ¬ tion Those statements are echoed by others in the energy field both in private industry and government Imperial Oil Ltd the coun countrys ¬ trys largest oil company says the supply picture looks good and it foresees no difficulties in meeting winter fuel demands The supply contrasts sharply with a year ago Sep September ¬ tember when consumers heard government pleas to cut driving and reduce home heat The major reason for the about face is the operative she said i went for five years without seeing the Vancouver district superintendent Here we met the superintendent on the first day She said many reforms sug suggested ¬ gested at a conference on teacher education called by former education commis commissioner ¬ sioner John Bremner last year have been built into the exten extended ¬ ded program The conference recommended more personal less theoretical training at the regional level and more self selection of programs All these points are satisfied in Prince George The early classroom experi experience ¬ ence is a blessing to many would be teachers who dont know until they try to teach that they are unfit for the work Mrs Kaser Cannon said We had one in Vancouver who withdrew on the first day of school at 9 10 am but it is bet better ¬ ter this way than at the end of eight months of study she said There is no other way of tel telling ¬ ling who will make a good teacher she said Studies show that none of the selection criteria such as grade point averages or interviews have anything to do with teaching success What we would ideally do is accept everyone who applied put him in the program and see how he did The program will be con continued ¬ tinued here probably for many years We already have enough interested to make another class she said The students will split their time in and out of classrooms during the first four months take over their own classes in the second semester and go to the SFU campus for the third Some observers have criticized the need to attend the Burnaby Mountain campus at all but Mrs Kaser Cannon believes the measure is broadening They are not exposed to the same intellectual atmosphere here as they would get at SFU she said HONDA CIVIC Jk yp Ann m Hollinger Motors Ltd 1764 indicated Saturday his New Democratic Party govern government ¬ ment wants to get into the financial business in one form or another He said in an interview after the western premiers confer conference ¬ ence that his government might become directly involved in provincially controlled financial institu institutions ¬ tions if Ottawa does not soon allow provinces to own shares in chartered banks Prior to the Western Economic Opportunities Con Conference ¬ ference in Calgary last year Mr Barrett asked that the pro provinces ¬ vinces be allowed to own shares in banks Prime Minister Trudeau later announced that pro provinces ¬ vinces would be allowed to buy up to 25 per cent of shares of newly established banks but would then have to slowly divest themselves of some shares until the holdings were reduced to 10 per cent Mr Barrett said Saturday he is displeased Ottawa hasnt acted on that promise and if the change doesnt come soon we will have to examine other financial institutions because we are not going to stand by while BC consumers are being hurt by the usurious practices of the existing banks Asked if this meant provin provincial ¬ cial involvement in credit unions or financial co cooperatives ¬ operatives which come under provincial jurisdiction Mr Barrett said it could mean a great number of things but refused to elaborate If youre a homeowner
