ORGANIZERS HERE Govt housing tenants urged to form group by TONY KANT Citizen staff reporter The screen doors on many of the public housing units in Prince George dont hang properly and tenants who com complain ¬ plain have been told all the doors will be removed instead of repaired Thats only one of the many reasons residents of public housing schemes in the city should form a tenants group according to organizers from Vancouver Bill Cross of the Canadian Organization of Public Hous Housing ¬ ing Tenants COPHT and Art Coutts of the Vancouver and District Public Housing Tenants Association VDPHCA are in Prince George to help tenants of hous housing ¬ ing projects if the BC Hous Housing ¬ ing Management Commission BCHMC forms a local chap chapter ¬ ter They have spent the last few days knocking on doors of tenants in Prince Georges 126 BCHMC units The BCHMC manages publicly owned hous housing ¬ ing for the provincial govern government ¬ ment Cross said a nu mber of meet meetings ¬ ings have been held and resi residents ¬ dents here are enthusiastic He said a steering committee has been formed to organize further meetings which may lead to the formation of a per permanent ¬ manent tenants group Cross said he wants to see as much participation as possible from the citys four BCHMC projects so policies can be formed to meet the needs of the largest number of people He said the quality and cost of public housing is his groups main concern Coutts said he has seen evi evidence ¬ dence of shoddy workmanship and poor quality material used in Prince George units He said floors are warping doors dont fit basements flood and hard hardware ¬ ware is difficult to replace because of obscure manufac manufacture ¬ ture He said public housing in general lacks proper landscap landscaping ¬ ing recreational areas and laundry facilities and these are a few of the things tenant groups can lobby for Cross said the group is also concerned about the high cost of public housing He said that under a new provincial govern government ¬ ment scheme to integrate better quality people in BCHMC projects the rent is becoming too high for many tenants Chiefs discuss govt funding Rejection of government funds will be dicussed by the Lakes District Council of Chiefs in Tache Saturday Chairman Ed John said the meeting will begin at 10 a in lillij IbR BILL CROSS -
