26 THE CITIZEN, Prince George Thursday, November 6, 1975 The Princess Marguerite is shown plying the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca during her. schedule of Victoria-Seattle trips last summer. One of the many PRINCESS MARGUERITE Seattle-Victoria VICTORIA (CP) - The Princess Marguerite has ended her first season under provincial control after proving she can make money sailing between Seattle and this Canadian port and also provide a flow of dollars for Victoria businessmen. The 27-year-old steamship formerly had sailed under the Canadian Pacific flag and apparently was in the red during its final years with the company. Harry Tyson, a former Canadian Pacific employee who now is general manager of the British Columbia Steamship Co., said the ship's profits after its first season under new ownership probably won't be far from the $100,000 figure mentioned during the summer by Premier Dave Barrett. About 270,000 passengers were carried by the vessel last season, 17,000 more than the year before, and Mr. Tyson said he expects another increase of 10 or 15 per cent next year. Mr. Tyson says passenger, BONN (Reuter) James Schlesinger, dismissed U.S. defence secretary, was quoted Tuesday as saying present realities are against a policy of detente with the Soviet Union. The conservative West German newspaper Die Welt published an interview given by Schlesinger shortly before his dismissal by President Ford. In the article, he was reported as saying: "I would like to hope that real detente, 'a real relaxation of tension, could be achieved with the East bloc but I do not m car and food revenues more than covered the ship's operating expenses as well as providing for the $300,000 refit last spring in Vancouver and for the lease arrangement the company has with the Crown Development Corp., owner of the Marguerite and the Prince George, which will be added to the line next season. He said he is optimistic about the Marguerite's prospects next season because the United States bicentenary and rising gas costs will make the short ferry trip between Victoria and Seattle even more attractive. Last season, the Marguerite averaged 1,100 passengers daily in her 120-day schedule that ended Sept.26. Mr. Tyson said he hopes this figure will increase to about 1,700 during the next couple of years. The passenger increase contributes more than additional fares because there are far more meals and drinks bought as a result, he said. Even if the Marguerite were Wrong time for detente want to replace reality by illusions or hopes. "And the. present reality is that the military power of the Soviet Union is expanding." Schlesinger went on to say that while the Soviet Union is increasing its military potential by three to four per cent every year, the United States has cut defence spending by almost 45 per cent since 1968. "He who believes in detente should see to it that the military balance is maintained and not become dependent on the goodwill of others," Schlesinger was quoted as saying. Mr. Tyson said the Marguerite's, outof-town passengers left at least $1 .4 million in the city this year. Also, supplies and services needed for the operation, from food to next season's refit, are all found locally. Mr. Tyson, who once was CP's West Coast marine operations manager and was coaxed out of two years' retirement to take, his new job, said car fares will increase to $15 from $5 May21, 1976. Passenger fares would remain unchanged except for a $1 increase in the five-day excursion tariff, which would increase to $15. Mr. Tyson said he cannot see the Princess Marguerite falling back into the red and expects the B.C. Steamship Co. will do just as well operating the Prince George on six-day coastal and Alaska tours out of Vancouver next season.
