were

the
derelict
building.

new
Astoria
has
already
been
built
nearby.
Witchcraft
trial
sensational

Housewives
in
Nasik
City,
200
miles
from
Bombay,
lit
decorative
oil
lamps
and
distributed
cakes
and
coconuts
among
neighbors.
Citizens
marched
in
a
procession
hailing
the
judiciary
as
"the
defender
of
truth."
The
great
Hindu
pilgrim
centre
was
celebrating
the
end
of
one
of
the
most
sensational
court
trials
in
India
in
many
years.
The
trial
attracted
countrywide
attention
since
it
involved
the
long-forgotten
practice
of
witchcraft.
Almost
an
entire
family
of
15
was
arrested
for
murdering
one
of
its
female
members,
suspecting
her
to
be
a
witch
who
caused
family
quarrels
with
the
help
of
her
powers.
Thirty-four-year-old
Ashok
Sohoni,
an
army
veteran,
and
his
unmarried
elder
sister
Vijaya
suspected
that
Ashok's
wife
Shubhangi
was
the
cause
of
all
their
family
fights
and
financial
troubles.
An
extremely
superstitious
man,
Ashok
leaned
heavily
for
"spiritual
guidance"
on
his
hysteria-prone
sister.
One
morning
.
Vijaya
announced
that
Meeravali
Baba,
the
family
god,
had
appeared
to
her
in
a
dream
and
said:
"Your
sister-in-law
is
a
witch.
Keep
your
eyes
on
her."
God
Baba
is
further
reported
to
have
told
Vijaya
that
Shubhangi
had
in
her
posses-;
sion
several
devices
for
practising
witchcraft
like
a
wooden
serpent,
an
elephant
made
of
.cloth,
glass
beads
that
gave
out
"evil
rays"
and
extracts
from
mountain
herbs.
Shubhangi
denied
the
charge
she
was
a
witch.
"Vijaya
is
crazy,"
she
said.
"Instead
of
asking
her
to
see
a
psychiatrist,
you
are
all
persecuting!
me.
You
are
behaving
like
15th-century
peasants."

six
months
Shubhangi
was
harassed
by
Ashok,
Vijaya
and
other
family
members
including
his
aged
parents.
One
night,

a
year
ago,
Shubhangi
was
murdered
in
cold
blood

"advice"
of
God
Baba.
"This
is
a
gruesome
crime
meriting
the
severest
punishment,"
the
Nasik
county
court
held,
sentencing
