Canada-EEC link okayed BRUSSELS (CP) - The European Economic Community (EEC) gave the stamp of approval Tuesday night to a contractual link with Canada, despite a point of objection raised by Denmark. A Canadian spokesman said the Common Market commission of ministers approved the idea in principle and instructed an EEC committee to iron out Danish objections. He said the commission, in effect, has said: "We have given approval as of Dec. 9 don't come back to us." Though details of the Danish objection centred on market access to Canadian resources remains somewhat obscure after the one-day com-mission meeting, Canadian officials were confident it would not delay negotiations. Prime Minister Trudeau has long campaigned for such a link, having earlier visited all Kissinger starts European junket WASHINGTON (AP) - His trip to Moscow temporarily sidelined, U.S. State Secretary Henry Kissinger is setting out on a nine-day swing through Western Europe that will take him to a NATO meeting, a major energy conference and to his Bavarian birthplace. At a news conference Tuesday, he abandoned the idea of tacking Moscow to the end of the trip in order to seek a breakthrough on nuclear weapons negotiations with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. However, Kissinger told reporters: "I would expect such a trip to take place in the next four or five weeks." Later, U.S. officials said he plans to go to Moscow in January. In a series of diplomatic exchanges, the two superpowers have narrowed their differences on the two major hangups blocking approval of the arms accord the Soviet Backfire bomber and the U.S. cruise missile. Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin called on President Ford at the White House Tuesday evening. Kissinger attended the session. U.S. officials emphasized that the United States is seeking assurances that an arms agreement is in prospect before a date for Kissinger's mission is set. At the same time, these officials said the postponement-Kissinger had. intended to see Brezhnev before Christmas-was not caused by any stiffening in the Soviet position. On the contrary, the Russians were described as gradually moving toward a settlement. Kissinger's first stop on the trip he begins today is Brussels, where NATO ministers are gathered to assess the alliance's strength in light of Portugal's leftward drift, and continuing strains in the eastern Mediterranean caused by the Cyprus dispute. The future of U.S. bases in both Greece and Turkey remain in doubt. This weekend, after a stop in London to confer with a number of U.S. ambassadors, Kissinger will go to Furth, which he and his family fled in 1938 under Nazi persecution. He has been back once since, in 1959, but will return now as Furth's most-famous native son. n EXCITING GIFT CERTIFICATES a $5 introductory lesson One hour of flying Private Pilot Course 1 1 the capitals of the nine-member community to promote the idea. "The decision seems to give us the chance to go ahead with negotiation j ust as Canada and the. EEC members wanted," a Canadian observer said. An EEC spokesman said no progress may be expected before January. "There will be a lot of preliminary paper work for Canada and EEC governments, before things get to hard bargaining" he added. Earlier, Canadian officials said once negotiations begin at least six months were necessary before a final agreement might be reached. "That is the optimistic view," one spokesman said. "It's not as easy as dealing with a single government. In this case each of the members has to keep referring back to their own governments and this can be timeconsuming." Italian Foreign Minister Mariano Rumor told a news conference earlier in the day that the EEC minister have decided to postpone the Canada-link issue under their next session Jan. 19. Conference sources said Denmark insisted that the Canadians uld abandon their system of two-tier oil prices, a lower one for the domestic market and a higher one for exports. Officials said other foreign ministers rejected the tough Rifz Weekender $37.95 An ideal downtown location. Free parking.
