Taxpayers forget deductions OTTAWA (CP) - Two most common errors of taxpayers filing 1975 tax returns early both occur in areas meant to save them money, Revenue Canada officials say. The first error Is not claiming employment expenses a standard deduction worth up to $150 that is available to everyone, officials say. The second is that many are not taking advantage of expanded provisions for deducting Interest and dividend income from earnings subject to taxes. The employment expenses deduction Is a simple matter of deducting three per cent of income, up to a maximum $150, from income. If you are a salesman on commission, or are required to travel frequently and receive no allowance for it, then this expense incurred to earn an income also may be claimed. The conditions are set out in the tax guide accompanying 1975 tax forms. Income from dividends paid by taxable Canadian companies and interest payments must be reported as income for tax purposes. But there is an offsetting deduction available for this income, and many taxpayers are forgetting to claim this deduction, Revenue Canada says. Basically, this deduction enables anyone to earn up to $1,000 of eligible interest and dividends without incurring an extra tax liability. This is the first year that dividends from Canadian companies have been included in this deduction. It is an effort to stimulate investment in Canadian companies. Often elderly taxpayers neglect to take full advange of legitimate deductions. There are some new areas on the 1975 tax form for these taxpayers that bear watching. For example, for the first time a deduction of up to $1,000 is provided for payments out of a pension fund, This is generally for taxpayers over 65, but if you are under 65 and receiving pension payments as a result of a spouse's death, then you also qualify. This deduction does not apply to the old age security pension or to guaranteed income supplements, or to benefits from the Canada or Quebec pension plans. Also frequently missed this year is a new provision allowing transfer of the unused part of a spouse's age exemption, interest and dividend income deduction and pension Income deduction to his own tax form in order to reduce over-all tax liability.
