The news came from the GOP convention in Kansas City during the day that President Fordhad. accumulated public commitments from one more delegate than he needs to win the nomination. But the formal decision remained to be made Wednesday niRht. The market also drew some support from individual corporate developments affecting' some of the front-rank growth and blue chip stocks. Digital Equipment, for instance, climbed nearly four points. After reporting higher quarterly earnings on Monday, the company proposed a threefor-two stock split. Profit pi cture dismal for indu stria I firms by BUD JORGENSEN Financial Times OTTAWA Industrial corporations turned in a ragged profit performance during the second quarter as less than half of 25 industrial groups had increases compared with a year earlier. Some groups bounced smartly back from depressed "profit" levels' of 'a"year ago a" Statistics Canada survey shows. Transportation equipment aircraft, cars, trucks, boats and trains led the way with a 79-per-cent increase, mainly on the strength ' of car sales. Most groups were either up substantially over profits in the second quarter last year or had sharp declines. The worst profit) performance was a drop of 47 per cent for rubber industries: Average profit for all industrial corporations rose one per cent and the second-quarter 'total " was $2".284 billion. Sale's were up 12 per cent to $57,508 billion: When measured against inflation, that slight profit rise becomes a loss in real terms. The .industry celling, prjee index, a broad measure of factory gate prices, rose 5.4 per cent between the second quarter last year and the second quarter this year. The consumer price index' increased by 8.5 per cent during the same period. Profits in manufacturing rose only 0.2 per cent, to $1,249 billion in the second quarter this year. Manufacturers' sales were up 13 per cent to $28,501 billion. The service group of industries had a two per cent drop in profit and a secondquarter total of $602 million. Sales by the service companies totalled $25,453 billion. Average profit in mining rose eight per cent and the total was $433 million. Sales were up 23 per cent to $3,554 billion. Of 15 manufacturing groups, seven had increases in profits during the second quarter. After transportation equipment, textiles had the best increase with, a gainof 73 per cent. But profits Tn textiles amounted to only 1.7 cents for each $1 in. sales, compared with 4.4 cents for all manufacturing. Machinery industries, mak-; ers 'of a variety of Industrial tools, and office equipment, had a profit rise of 25 per cent. However, sales in machinery industries were up only nine per cent, suggesting that orders have not been strong and some of the profit was on sales from inventory. Other manufacturing groups with increased profits were : metal fabricators, 22 per cent; wood industries, ,11 per cent; printing, publishing and allied industries, 11 per cent; and processors of non-metallic minerals, three per cent. Next to rubber industries, pulp and paper companies and processors of primary metals had the' largest profit decline as these two groups each had profit drops of 27 per cent from a year earlier. Food and beverage manufacturers had a one-per-cent drop in profits.- Petroleum refiners and pro-, cessbrs of coal had a profit drop of 18 per cent while producers of chemical products had (a four-per-cent drop in profits. Profits for makers of electrical products were off 15 per cent; There was no change for the 'miscellaneous manufacturing group. Only two manufacturing groups had gains in sales which ran well ahead of price increases Sales of transporta-? tion equipment were up 22 per, cent;, reflecting strong demand for cars, and sales of wood industries rose 21 per cent as housing construction activity picked up sharply from a year earier. In the service group of companies the best profit gain was 39 per cent for utilities. Communications companies followed with an increase of 35 per cent. Profits for the other five components of this group were either down or unchanged. Wholesale and. retail mer- GARTH WARREN For service before and after tales see me at . . , RICE CHEV. OLDS. 20th & Victoria 564-4466 chants had declines from a year earlier, as consumer spending was weak in many area. For retail merchants the decline was 31 per cent and for wholesalers seven per cent. Storage companies had a drop of 40 per cent in profits and for the remaining two service groups transportation and community, business or personal services there was no change from a year earlier. The over-all profit rise of eight per cent for mining was mainly due to an increase of 15 per cent for the oil and coal companies. Metal mines had an increase of only three per cent and for other mining, which includes asbestos, stone and sand quarries and gypsum, there was a decline of 11 per cent. Oil supply figures lowered by company TORONTO (CP) Imperial Oil Ltd., Canada's major 'oil producer, has reduced its 1975 estimates of the country's crude oil reserves, a spokesman for the company said Monday. Bob Fenner, managen of Imperial's public relations de-'partment; said the company is predicting that in less than four years Canada will not have enough oil to supply areas west of Montreal, which are dependent on domestic .crude oil. Areas east of Montreal always have used imported crude because there is no pipeline to bring oil from western Canada. In a report to the National Energy Board the company! blames rising exploration and development costs and lack of government incentives for having to reduce its 1975 estimates of crude oil reserves by onethird. The report, to t?e discussed when the board begins hearings in Calgary on Oct. 19, says the cost of improved techniques to remove oil from existing wells is increasing and under current tax and royalty regulations the process may be too costly. The company also says due to increasing costs, high taxes, and royalties, it does not ex-i pect any new oil supplies from) N.Q.A: Bruce D. Gilchrist ci.u. Gilchrist Insurance Agency ltd. The company also says it is less optimistic about Arctic Island discoveries. Lst year it said two billion barrels of oil would be discovered north of Hudson's Bay.
