gourmet
eating
has
to
be
when
you
pull
up
a
fresh,
crunchy
sweet
carrot
out
of
your
own
garden,
wipe
it
off
and
eat
it
on
the
spot?
Good
carrots
are
easy
to
grow
if
you
sow
them
in
loose,
sandy
soil.
Heavy
clay
soils
tend
to
produce
a
root
that
is
hard,
compacted,
hairy
and
relatively
tasteless.
Carrots,
depending
on
the
variety,
take
from
50
to
68
days
to
maturity,
often
making
the
fastest
progress
in
sizing
up
during
the
last
week
or
so
before
harvest.
Preparing
the
soil
to
a
good
depth
is
essential
since
the
roots
grow
up
to
ten
inches
long.
They
will
germinate
poorly
in
wet
cold
soil
(needing
a
soil
temperature
of
at
least
60
deg.
F.
for
good
germination)
or
not
at
all
on
clay
soils
that
stay
soggy
wet
and
crust
on
top.
Although
a
little
manure
in
the
soil
is
good,
avoid
a
heavy
application
since
this
can
result
in
hairy,
rough
skinned
roots.
Sow
the
seed
as
thinly
as
possible
and
quite
shallow.
Cover
about
a
quarter
of
an
inch
and
not
more
than
a
half
inch.
The
seed
takes
two
to
three
weeks
to
germinate.
If
you
would
like
to
have
the
rows
marked
quickly
or
need
a
method
of
sowing
them
thinner,
mix
in
a
few
radish
seeds.
These
germinate
in
a
few
days
marking
off
the
carrot
row
and
as
you
pull
them
for
use
will
thin
the
row
as
well.
A
package
of
seeds
such
as
you
purchase
on
a
seed
stand,
can
be
expected
to
give
you
approximately
30
feet
of
row
and
if
all
goes
well
with
no
setbacks
by
poor
weather
or
other
cultural
reasons,
you
should
be
able
to
expect
a
yield
of
about
30
pounds.
Too
thick
a
row
will
produce
mostly
small
or
stringy
carrots,
so
take
time
off
during
the
growing
season
to
thin
them
out
to
stand
singly
(not
in
bunches),
about
a
quarter
to
half
inch
apart
is
even
better.
The
thinning
may
be
done
after
the
carrots
have
begun
to
size
up
to
about
2
to
3
inches
long.
The
pulled
out
carrots
can
be
trimmed,
washed
then
canned
or
frozen
for
winter
or
you
can
cook
them
immediately
for
the
table.
