BlffisaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiaPBaaaaaaaab-a 2 New Orleans Saints' Jame9 Thaxton loses footing and Not many cars, but close races The field of cars was small, but racing was close at the PGARA Speedway Saturday night. Stock car racing has been in a slump here this year and Saturday's field of just 17 cars and a crowd of fewer than 200 people was the smallest in more than five years. But the, nine $299 claimers and eight limited stocks put on the best show they could, with several close races, a lot of bumping and two spectacular crashes. Claimer points leader John Baker had quick time in his section of qualifying at 17.768 seconds, while veteran Joe Sabatino was quick in limited stocks at 17.282, as there were just 75 laps ran in seven races far less than the PGARA average. No one was able to win more than once,, although Bernie Lewis did make two victory laps' with the checkered flag in limited stocks a result of confusion after a crash in the heat. Dave Baker, running well all night, won the claimer trophy dash and Lewis won the dash for limited stocks. Len Hanson led fom start to finish in the claimer heat, then the confusion came in the limited stock heat. Warren Bergman was leading when he and Lewis and Larry London were involved in a wild spinning accident between turns three and four. Bergman went on to win, according to track officials, although the victory lap was made by Lewis. The first of two bad crashes came in the 20-lap claimer main, as Walter Bitz crashed Ken Friesen's car hard into the concrete wall after going wide out of the fourth corner. Bitz wasn't hurt and Bruce MacDonald went on to win. MacDonald, 'second in claimer point standings, took advantage of John Baker's blown engine to close the gap on the defending points champion. ' The most spectacular crash came 'in the 20-lap limited stock main. Lewis and Paul Brown got locked up along the back chute in the sixth lap. Lewis disappeared into the pits and Brown crashed hard into the huge truck tires on the outside of the end of the chute. His car was completely airborne, but came back down on its wheels' and Brown was able to finish the race, taking third from Warren Bergman in a close charge to the line. Larry London held off a challenge from Steve Arronge with some steady driving to win. A five-lap, four-car media race produced a one-two finish for entertainers Cec Shaw and Ian Johnstone. The next racing is Wednesday, with qualifying at 6 p. in. and racing at 7. PGARA president John Dean feels mid-week facing might be preferred by fans who have other things planned for weekends. Starr was livid following New England's 38-3 pre-season game victory, complaining that Patriots coach Chuck Fairbanks had tried to run up the score by playing key people and using play-action passes late in the game. "I'm going to be around a long time," said Starr. "And if anybody tries to rub our nose in it like that when we're down 38-3 by calling play-action passes, so help me God, I'll never forget it." ' Told of Starr's angry comments, Fairbanks said: "It was an offensive game, and we had some interceptions and good runbacks. We weren't particularly interested in the score. We were looking for players that might help the ball club during the season." Two players Fairbanks found were the top choices on his shopping list at the last NFL draft, first-round picks Raymond Clayborn and Stanley Morgan, who scored on punt returns of 88 and 62 yards, respectively. Elsewhere, on the second full weekend of NFL preseason action, New York Jets beat Atlanta Falcons 17-2, Buffalo Bills beat Detroit Lions 17-10, New Orleans Saints defeated New York Giants 23-7, Cincinnati Bengals blanked Tampa Bay Bucaneers 45-0, Miami Dolphis beat Washington Redskins 27-15, Seattle Seahawks beat Dallas Cowboys 23-17 in overtime, San Diego Chargers defeated San Francisco '49ers 32-13, Chicago Bears upset Oakland Raiders 20-13, Denver Broncos beat St. Louis Cardinals 15-7, Kansas City Chiefs beat Pittsburgh Steelers 23-21, Minnesota Vikings edged Cleveland Browns 34-33 and Los Angeles Rams defeated Philadelphia Eagles 20-3. In Sunday's only game, Baltimore Colts beat Houston Oilers 14-7 when backup quarterback Mike Kirkland sprinted 14 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Buffalo's O.J. Simpson, whose blurred vision was a source of concern the last few weeks, found the end zone twice on runs of 15 yards and one yard out. It was Simpson's first game action of the season, and he seemed to be rounding into regular season form, carrying for 55 yards on nine attempts. The Jets scored their first touchdown of 1977 when Tommy Marvaso's 20-yard interception runback set up Clark Gaines' three-yard touchdown run". Former Jets star Joe Namath was not a factor in the Rams'" victory over Philadelphia, tossing just-one pass which fell incomplete. CAAARA quick time, at 15.091. Robertson won the dash; Ken Lines of Calgary took the slow heat and Jan Sneva the fast heat. Larson won the 35-lap main, with Cliff Hucul of Prince George second in the old four-wheel-drive car he used to set the PGARA Speedway modified record two years ago. Jack Cross of Langeley was third.
