6 THE CITIZEN, Prince George Friday, October 28, 1977 Fighting eviction MONTREAL (CP) - Plans for a gambling casino in a downtown hotel during Grey Cup festivities Nov. 24-26 have been dropped for the time being, Grey Cup committee organizers said Wednesday. Although the Quebec government has given the committee a special licence' to run a casino featuring blackjack tables, roulette wheels and other games, police have said such gambling would be against the law. Committee president Roger Laterreur said he will "cancel everything" if permission is not granted by Monday. A man identified only as a self-employed accountant holds a machete Wednesday as he peers from window of the apartment in north London, where he has been surrounded by police since the day before. That was when, officers said, he wounded three police as they were attempting to help bailiffs to take over the flat, owned by the Islington Council. Committee scraps Grey Cup casino Laterreur said the govern ment permit limits betting to a maximum of $2 and that all proceeds would go to charity. But a Montreal police spokesman said "we think it's against the law and that's it." "They are supposed to have blackjack tables there and according to the Criminal Code, it's against the law." Laterreur said he will talk to Montreal police director Henri Paul Vignola before he goes through with plans for the casino. "We want to make sure they're not going to walk in and arrest everybody." The manufacturer, Duane Babcock of Sumas, said the professor's statements are either false or made without direct knowledge of the substance. The professor and other drug experts were quoted in a copyrighted story today in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The newspaper said Dr. Alan H. Nittler, medical director for Babcock's Northwest Botanic Enterprises, Inc. had his license to practice medicine revoked in California in 1975 for treating cancer patients "in a negligent manner." Laetrile, espoused by some LSlF are as a cure for cancer, also goes under the names of amygdalin and Vitamin B-17. Its manufacture and sale were legalized by the Legislature this year. Dr. Jerry P. Lewis, professor of medicine and chief of hematology and oncology at the University of California at Davis School of Medicine, was quoted as saying that a dosage of 18 pills a day "is within the lethal dosage range for an adult." He said the recommended dosage would contain approximately 450 milligrams of cyanide, and it takes between 30 to 300 milligrams of pure cyanide to kill a person. Dr. Lynn Brady, chairman of the University of Washington Pharmaceutical Sciences Department said the amount of cyanide found in pure amygdalin would be slightly higher, INSURANCE IS VITAL BUT NOT NECESSARILY EXPENSIVE CALL US AND CHECK OUR RATES DAVE KEHL INSURANCE SERVICE 563-3822 LTD. 562-5012 No. 102-1575-5th Ave. Babcock told the Associated Press today that the California professor was "lying.
