                      LOS ANGELES (AP) — Norman Lear, the man who brought Archie Bunker, Mary Hartman and other outrageous characters to the home screen, is saying good-bye to weekly Lear	television—(or a while, at least.

m	||	devote his time to writing and directing
farewell motion pictures, studying programming for cable TV or so-called over-the-air pay TV, and other projects.
                           Lear, 55, became the king of situation comedy with such shows as All in the Family,
Maude, Sanford and Son, Good Times and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, in which he overcame barriers and made television history.
  In the seven years since All in the Family broke TV taboos by dealing with bigotry in January, 1971, on CBS, Lear has been responsible for 16situation comedies totalling 1,400 episodes either on the networks or in station syndication.
  He said he would continue to work as a consultant for his two production companies.
