This means that two sets of yarn came together from opposite directions to create a piece of material. The yam was woven in and out on a loom. Weaving is done not only to create fabric but to produce works of art. There may be a pretty weaving in your home. If there isn’t, try weaving your own abstract picture using colored yarns and a cardboard loom. 1. You will need a piece of lightweight cardboard for the loom. Poster board, sold at the dime store, can be used. It comes in many colors. 2. Cut a shape from the cardboard. It can be square, round or have an unusual shape like a heart or diamond. 3. Cut short slits into all edges of the cardboard, Fig. a. 4. Collect bits of colored yarn. Ask your neighbor or relatives for any extra yam. 5. Tie a big knot into one end of a length of yam or attach a paper clip to it. 6. Slip the knotted or clipped end into a slit. Pull so that the knot or clip rests on the cardboard, Fig. a. This is the back. 7. Weave the yam in one slit and out the nert at the back of the cardboard. The yam at the front goes in every direction. 8. Tape or knot the end of the string to the back. 9. Weave different-colored yams on the loom. You can add string, cord, or narrow ribbons to make your weaving more interesting.
