Foyt watched the competition crumble as he drove a steady race and easily notched a record third victory at Pocono International Raceway in Sunday’s $375,000 Music 500. The seemingly-ageless Texan, now 44, kept alive his incredible string of finishing every lap of competition possible for him so far in 1979 races, through five Indianapolis-type races and three stock car events. Foyt, driving a Cosworth-powered Parnelli, finished more than seven miles ahead of Jim McElreath in an aging Eagle-Offenhauser. Larry Dickson, who ran second most of the race, dropped out three laps from the finish and settled for third place, followed by Jerry Sneva and Dick Simon. Only six cars were running at the finish of the 25 that started in the smallest field for a Indy car 500-mile race since 1925. ★ ★ * Cliff Hucul of Prince George qualified 11th and finished 11th, running 158 of the 200 laps. Lopez wins open; gift for husband Tough guys' not allowed KELOWNA, B.C. (CP) -Unsanctioned fights or “roughhouse boxing matches” will not be allowed in any city facilities, city council decided Monday. The decision was prompted by applications to use the city arena for the boxing matches in which participants are recruited from the audience. This type of fight card, where the pugilists have ranged from burly bikers to longshoremen, bouncers and loggers, have been held recently in Vancouver and Kamloops. Conventional boxing rules do not have to be followed. Henry Markgraf, Kelowna director of civic properties, said a match recently held in Vancouver got out of hand and required police action. He said the local RCMP believe that such events ‘‘have a potential to get rough and out of hand.” Council will allow amateur boxing providing specific conditions are met. Participants must register at least two weeks before the match and have medical examinations. Proper refereeing also must be supplied. HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) -Nancy Lopez gave her husband, Tim Melton, an anniversary present Sunday. Lopez, the LPG Atour’s leading money-winner, won the $100,000 Lady Keystone Open by two shots at Hershey Country Club’s west course. The victory came one year and one day after the couple’s first date during the 1978 Lady Keystone. Lopez scored a two-shot triumph over Sally Little and veteran Kathy Whitworth. Lopez shot an even par 72 in the final round and finished with a 54-hole total of 212, four under par on the demanding 6,398yard Hershey layout. ‘i’m very happy to have won it,” Lopez said. “I have a lot of good memories here. I met Tim here, we had our first home here. It will always be special.” Lopez’ victory did not come without challenge. Amy Alcott and Betsy King along with Whitworth were deadlocked with Lopez midway through thefinal round. Little was making a belated charge. But after Lopez birdied the 14th hole, it was all downhill for the challengers. King bogeyed three straight holes to drop out of contention. Whitworth dropped a shot, Pitcher signed TORONTO (CP) - Toronto Blue Jays have signed right-handed pitcher Kem Wright, 22, their No.l pick in the June secondary draft, the American League baseball club announced Friday. The University of Texas graduate will report to Kinston, a Toronto farm club in the Class A Carolina League. Alcott bogeyed the final two holes and Little bogeyed the final hole. Lopez put a lock on her sixth title of 1979 with a birdie at her favorite hole on her home course. The par-five 474-yard 16th gave up four shots to Lopez during the tournament. She birdied the hole, including rounds one and three and eagled it in the second round. The victory was Lopez’ 15th in her brief career. The $15,000 winner’scheck pushed her 1979 earnings to $136,775. She now has $349,827 in career earnings. In eleven starts in 1979, she has’ftijc wins and three second placs finishes. Cathy Sherk of Port Col-borne, Ont., won $620 with rounds of 74-76-74 for a 224 total. Dale Shaw of Victoria had scores of 73-80-76 for 229 and Jocelyne Bourassa of Shawinigan, Que., had rounds of 72-78-80 for 230. Both finished out of the money. Canadians lose VANCOUVER (CP) -Albuquerque crashed through with four runs on five hits in the fourth inning Saturday night and held on to defeat Vancouver Canadians 4-2 in a Pacific Coast League baseball game before 1,739 fans. Hucul, 31, was second behind Foyt in United States Auto Club points heading into the race. His finish was an improvement on his only other start at Pocono, last June 25, when he qualified 19th, ran 153 laps and finished 17th. The first two-thirds of the race was a competitive pot boiler with seven different drivers taking a turn at the lead. But Foyt’s closest competitor, Danny Ongais, retired with 150 miles to go, and Dick-; son lost a lap during a long pit stop at the 400-mile mark. After that, it was a cakewalk for Foyt in his 65th win on the Indianapolis car circuit dating back to 1960. He collected $78,000. He averaged a slow 134.995 miles an hour due to caution flags for 39 of the 200 laps around the 2.5-mile tri-oval. There were 17 lead changes, with Foyt leading continuously from the 148th lap. When the race started, Ongais dashed into the lead, followed closely by Johnny Parsons. Parsons took over the lead on the 12th lap, but he began to have problems and shortly thereafter retired with burnt valves. Foyt, who had a poor start and dropped back to a distant fourth, recouped after his first pit stop and took over the lead on the 29th circuit. Roger McCluskey roared into contention at the 100-mile mark and took the lead briefly. But a tire exploded on his car just after halfway, putting him into the third turn wall and out of the race. Just short of 200 miles, Eldon Rasmussen slammed viciously into the first turn wall and demolished his car. Observers said the rear wing may have come off and caused him to wreck. The 42-year-old native of Standard, Alta., suffered a broken leg, a concussion and possible broken ribs. Rasmussen has lived in Indianapolis since 1968. USAC now takes a break until July 29 at College Station, Texas .where Hucul was fourth in April. GAS SAVER Tired of Paying These Gas Prices?
