PRICES ENCOURAGING
Gold mines coming back
  MONTREAL (CP) - With the price of gold skyrocketing, longabandoned gold mines in Quebec are once again coming to life.
   “There is a possibility of opening or reopening 12 properties,” L. G. Langlois, general manager of Quebec Metal Mining Association Inc., said in an interview Tuesday.
    Most of these properties are on the Cadillac break, a geological fault that runs through the towns of Cadillac, Malartic and Val d’Or, about
 450 kilometres northwest of Montreal.
   Meredith Holt, exploration manager of Camflo Mines Ltd. of Toronto, said northwestern Quebec "is shaping up to be one of the most prolific gold areas”in Canada.
   Darius Gold Mine Inc., owned by Gold Fields Mining Corp. of New York, has recently reactivated its mine, closed down in 1956 by a previous owner.
   Mine manager F3runo Vatri said that before Darius began preparing the property for
 development in 1973 there were six employees on the site. Now there are 100.
   The mine is producing 200 tons of ore a day with 0.35 ounces of gold per ton of ore. “But it will take a few years before we are in the big profit picture,” Vatri added.
   Meanwhile, the nearby town of Cadillac is benefitting from the increased activity. Most of the population of 1,000 are employed and about $2.5 million has been invested there in the past three years for restoration and development.
