Wong Regional Superintendent, Materials Management Canadian Air Tronspbrtotion Administration Telephone: (604) 666-1378 Telex: 04-54320 _ L-l-31 Fishermen's union supported VANCOUVER(CP) - A leader of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union has defended the union’s demand for a 200 per cent increase in the minimum price of roe herring. Business agent Bill Procopation said the union’s goals for minimum prices — $3,500 a ton for gitynet-caught herring, up from $1,200 last year, and $2400 a ton for seine-caught herring, up from $650 - are equal to last year’s actual prices. "What we’re asking for is not all that different than what was paid last year," he said. "We don’t feel it’s out of line.” The difference would be that the new prices would be guaranteed. However, a spokesman for B.C. fishing companies repeated a waring made two weeks ago that the industry must drastically reduce its herring roe prices this year if it hopes to win back Japanese consumers. Jerry Spitz, president of the Fisheries Association of B.C., which represents 80 per cent of coastal firms, said the effect of last year’s prices was to totally collapse the market.” He said Japanese consumers boycotted, the luxury food product when it hit $45 a pound, driving the price down, and continued to resist buying it; "To get the consumer back we’re going to have to ^drastically change the price structure,” Spitz said. ’We’re going to have to , udge what consumers in Japan will pay, then relate to that price to the fishermen.” Prorogation said cuts in Heherring catch quota will mean only about 7,000 tons of roe on the Japanese market - ‘‘barely enough to sustain the market for the coming winter” - but Spitz disagreed. "They’ve got enough there (Japan) for this season,” he said. “They don’t have to buy any more.” A LINE IN OUR WANT ADS GETS WHOPPING RESULTS . / (ojiA ttacU ho juk 6t»w) A The Citizen WANT ADS You name it. .. we'll sell it!
