40 - THE CITIZEN. Prince George “Gi'f”, my wife recently asked. “Would you please make up your mind? One week you ask me to buy margarine, the next week you want to switch back to butter. If you doctors can’t make up your minds about this cholesterol thing, how can the consumer know what to buy?” Powerful propaganda seems to have done it again. And I was one of the victims. Margarine producers in North America have spent millions trying to rid the country of eggs and butter. Now the Dairy Bureau is fighting back with full page ads reminding us that butter is a natural food. I agree it’s time to either annihilate hens and cows or learn to live with and enjoy them. Are hens and cows causing coronary attacks? Should people worry about their cholesterol level if it is over 300 mg (milligrams) and the resulting threat of heart attack? Can they eat. drink and be merry if it’s under 200 mg? And is it really possible to lower the cholesterol level by a change in dietary habits? Lets first throw out some common misconceptions about cholesterol. Many people think the only way to obtain cholesterol is from food. That a truly healthy diet doesn't contain cholesterol. And that high blood cholesterol invariably triggers heart attacks. None of these facts are true. Margarine manufacturers neglect to tell you that the human body produces 3X as much cholesterol as is consumed in the normal diet. That every body cell is composed of lipoportein which contains 40 per cent cholesterol. That it is needed to produce sex hormones, cortisone and other essential substances. And that about 80 per cent of coronary victims have normal cholesterol levels. So why all the fuss about cholesterol? It is true that too much of it produces atherosclerosis, the biological rust inside our arteries. And in too many patients it causes coronary blockage and premature death. What is the normal cholesterol level? The average world figure is 170 mg. But there are wide variations from nation to nation. Even within the same country. And when you examine these differences it makes you wonder if we’re living in the wrong part of the world. For example, cholesterol levels are low among men Doctors urged to aid gays OTTAWA (CP) - Family doctors are being urged to help homosexual men and women cope with problems ranging from marriage difficulties to learning how to accept their homosexuality. In the current issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Vancouver psychiatrist Dr. Michael Myers says homosexuals are not necessarily candidates for psychiatry and common problems should be dealt with by family physicians. Homosexuality cannot be ignored because of "the size, diversity and emerging identity of the gay community in North America.” Myers attempts to dispel some misconceptions associated with homosexuality. for example, homosexual men are not generally child molesters despite the widespread belief they are a threat to little boys. “Most child molesters are heterosexual men. This knowledge, along with a more enlightened attitude, is crucial for any physician or psychiatrist involved in child custody battles in which the father is gay or the mother is lesbian.” An assistant director of inpatient services of Shaughnessy Hospital’s psychiatric department, Myers is also an assistant medical professor at the University of British Columbia. He provides a cursory guide to psychiatric problems faced by homosexuals and in many cases by heterosexual persons, as well. These include alcoholism, depression resulting from a breakup with one’s lover and concern about sexual performance later in life. But Myers focuses on other sensitive issues such as "coming out" and marital problems involving a bisexual spouse With some groundwork using current research and literature, doctors should lv i i a position to help their patients with these problems. He suggests doctors try to counsel parents as well as lion osexuals who are gradually coming to terms with their lion osexual identity. For a m.uried patient who has not «et old his or In t spouse, the situation may become extremely difficult for the family physician, especially if there are medical and p: ychologic problems. Thursday, September 25, 1980 THE DOCTOR GAME ‘ \ S by DR. W. GIFFORD-JONES from Corfu and Crete in Greece, from Dalmatia in Yugoslavia and Japan. Populations that are involved in agriculture and fishing have levels ranging from 100 to 140. They rarely suffer from coronary disease. A recent report in the Medical Post had an interesting comment about Saudi Arabia. The Saudi's possess mountains of oil. But at the luxurious King Feisal Hospital in Rijadh few coronary bypass operations are done. Atherosclerosis is rare in Saudi Arabia. Heart disease is also lower in less affluent regions such as Latin America and the Orient where the level is around 150 mg. Even in the more industrialized parts of Greece, Yugoslavia and Japan the inci- dence of heart problems is 60 per cent less than in North America. People in Canada. U.S.. central and northern Europe. New Zealand and Australia are doing something wrong. Over average levels of cholesterol range from 220 to 280. And we have the highest rate of coronary disease in the world. But must we quickly slaughter all the hens and cows? To me that doesn’t make sense. These animals have been around a long time. Moreover they’ll outlast the hu..ian race if we believe all the ads on T.V. And naively accept the notion that we can beat heart disease by simply switching to margarine, while forgetting the important things that cause premature heart attacks. Blaming the hen for our cholesterol level is likecriticiz-ing the car for accidents rather than drunken drivers, lt should be obvious to everyone how we’re damaging the drainpipes of the next generation. Our children start the day with sugar-coated cereals and calorie laden danish pastries. They consume soft drinks with seven spoonfuls of sugar in each bottle. They eat junk foods and french fries loaded with salt. They puff on cigarettes and would rather watch TV than exercise. Too many calories are the main cause of coronary disease. Even a dumb-witted hen could tell everyone how to fight escalating cholesterol levels. A balanced diet of lean meat, fish, eggs, butter, milk, fresh fruit and raw vegetables is the answer. Toss out the white bread and put fiber back into the system with bran cereals and whole wheat bread. Fight an increasing sugar consumption. And go easy on salt. Think thin and remain active. Atherosclerosis won’t be beaten by a sudden switch to margarine or the elimination of eggs. Once the drainpipes are clogged there’s no miracle drug nor any diet that will clear them. Good dietary habits established early in life are the only prevention. "So Mrs. G.-J. butter and eggs, please, in moderation.” ° /Vew P°^ OUR PRICES ARE ALWAYS BETTER!
