CARPENTRY THE CITIZEN, Prince George — Friday, December 5, 1980 — 37 CROSSCUT IS SENSIBLE CHOICE Larry Eisinger* HOME WORKSHOP FOE i saw CARBIDE TIP the thumb against the side of the blade as a guide. One or two short up strokes will usually be all that’s needed to make a starting nick so you can begin sawing. Once you get started, let the saw do most of the work. The crosscut saw should be held at about a 45-degree angle between the work and the plane of the saw. (Ripping is done with the more upright angle of about 60 degrees.) Then you must more or less guide it since it will cut on both the up and down stroke pretty much on its own. Use long smooth strokes that utilize as much of the length of the blade as possible. You should keep your saw sharpened, but most people won’t do their own sharpening. So when you have a sharp saw, protect the teeth. Of course, you want to avoid cutting through nails. Actually though, most damage to a saw’s teeth is done while the saw is not being used. This can be avoided by protecting the teeth. The easiest protector is made from a length of old garden hose cut to the length of the saw blade and then slit so it can be slipped over the teeth when the saw isn’t being used. The blade should also be protected from corrosion. Clean it after each use, and also lubricate it. Some people use a light oil. Others rub either soap or wax over the sawblade. Personally, I think a spritz with a spray lube and then a wipe to remove excess does the job. Whatever lube you use, don’t use too much so that it comes off on the work. the saw made for that -which is called a rip saw. Both saws look about the same at first glance. However, in most cases there’ll be a place on the blade that tells you what type saw it is. If not, you can tell by the teeth. If you look closely, a crosscut saw has sort of tent-shaped teeth with a slant both ways. The rip saw has teeth in which the front edge is at right angles to an imaginary line along the edge of all the teeth. The crosscut saw teeth are pointed, while the rip saw has chisel-shaped teeth. My description won’t be anywhere near as good as trip to the hardware store for a comparison. by AL CARRELL With all the neat power saws, many folks never end up owning a hand saw. Actually there are times when it’s quicker to use a hand saw than to get an extension cord and get hooked up to go electric. Besides it is good exercise. The basic hand saw, if you’re only going to have one, probably is going to be the crosscut saw. It is so called because it’s designed to cut across the grain of the wood, and since that’s what most sawing chores involve, that’s your best buy. It is also able to cut with the grain, which is called ripping. However, it doesn’t do ripping as well as work alittle harder with the finer cut. Once you have your saw, you’ll want to learn how to best use it. The accepted grip is one I call the “Uncle Sam Wants You” grip. You remember the recruiting posters where he points at you? Grip the saw with your forefinger running along the side of the handle pointing to ward the end. The actual gripping is done with the other thumb coming around over the middle finger. This gives you better control. ‘ To start the cut, you need to grip the edge of the work with the other hand, using Back to our first suggestion. If you’re only going to have one saw, go for the crosscut. Besides, ripping is usually going to be a fairly long cut, and a power saw does this quicker and usually more accurately. In buying the saw, I’d suggest that you get one that is 26 inches long. There are shorter and longer saws, but this one will get you through most around-the-home sawing chores. The next consideration is the number of points per inch. Points are the teeth. If you’re only buying the one saw, I’d suggest an 8-point crosscut. The more teeth per inch, the finer the cut. Hollick said installation costs for site-built panels were about $75.34 a square metre ($7 a square foot) compared with about $215 a square metre ($20 a square foot) for manufactured panels. The National Research Council is helping to fund further research on Conser-val’s concept. It has given the company a $300,000 grant over seven months ending in January for the development of a site-built solar panel for use with a water heating system. Hollick said the concept is so simple that anyone can make use of it. Conserval makes its own site-built panels using aluminum but has no ptent on them or the concept. It hopes to benefit from its idea by selling more controls and distribution equipment for solar heating systems. The company is acting as a consultant to Dofasco Ltd. of Hamilton, which is building a protype panel of steel for use in commercial buildings, warehouses and factories. “In Europe and Quebec, there are a lot of buildings with steel roofs,” Hollick said. ‘‘Dofasco feels that they could be as solar collectors.” TORONTO (CP) - An engineering company has come up with a new approach to solar heating that could change the basic design of industrial buildings and houses. The concept, by Conserval Engineering Inc. of Toronto, turns buildings themselves into solar collectors through materials incorporated into roofs or walls, says John Hollick, vicepresident and general manager. Hollick said in an interview the conventional solar heating systems use a series of heat collecting panels added on to existing structures. A normal panel consists of a metal absorber, painted black, overlaid by a sheet of glass to contain the heat and mounted within an insulated frame. The problem with this type of system is that it duplicates supporting and insulation materials in the building itself and makes solar heating expensive, Hollick said. Under Conserval’s concept, solar panels can be built on the construction site. Corrugated metal heat-collecting panels are simply attached to wooden or metal uprights used to support a roof or wall. There are no frames. The panels are overlaid with glass and are insulated from behind with the building’s normal insulation. Between the panels and the-insulation is aspace where hot air accumulates and is distributed by fans connected to thermostats. “What we are trying to do is cut the duplication of COARSE - DIAMONDS ARE 45 MICRONS Chicago Tribune • York Newt Syndicate.
