The new building opened May 1st and is doing more than twice the business that the smaller, older building did. Since opening it has loaned an average of 3,300 books a day. The av-erago circulation of the old library was 1.350 books a day. It was thought that circulation would increase about 30 percent but the first few days show an increase of 150 percent. Over a thousand requests for library cards have been received. The new library has more books (approximately 102,000) . . . more kinds of books. It's more than a library. It's askill and information centre for the community... a civic building ... the first stage of the cultural centre. Basically, the new library is a facility upgraded to a scale required by a using population of over 70,000. Upgrading includes more books, study seating, activity space, records, magazines and display facilities. New services for new people. Serving established users in new ways. At the present rate of increase, membership is expected to swell from 20,000 to 35,000. The new building and a more realistic budget greatly increase the public service capability enabling the library staff to be more responsive and provide a quality service. 32,000 square feet divided bet- service ween two floors means more library for more people. Both floors of the old building would fit side-by-side on the main floor of the new library. Clerestory design with windows around the upper portion of the transcepts and an immense skylight admit natural light to the central part of the building. Large windows on the south side of the building serve to make the trees on Connaught Hill part of the decor. The effect is one of space and tranquility. The main floor features, besides circulation desk and display area, the Children's Library and multipurpose space. Special emphasis is boing placed on increasing the number of activities to attract young readors. Extra attontion is being directed to pre-school youngsters Even the furniture is in graduate' sizes to suit everyone. The display area has capabilities very similar to those of a retail outlet. Display panels and cases are available for the use of schools, organizations and individuals, increasing community involvement with the library. This involvement is further increased by the multipurpose area available for any number of community happenings. The broad stairway that leads to the second floor creates a feeling of motion and dictates the lay-out of the upper floor. Prince George residents appear to feel comfortable with their now library. It's a facility for young and old ... the casual and serious reader. It's also an information centre for people from all walks of life . . . tradesman, professional person, student or those in business. The library has the responsibility of informing people acting on their own behalf Easy access to information is provided so that individual residents may function more efficiently. Of particulai interest are the sections on Auto Manuals covering models from the e^'ly '70 s to the present and the local history collection containing maps and documented materials. Because a library reflects the needs of a community.. . you're invited to make your needs known. By doing so, you'll help your library do more for more people. At the new Prince George Public Library, Chief Librarian Stan Smith and a staff of 28 are ready to serve you between 9:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday—9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m Sundays (October through April).
