THE CITIZEN, Prince George — Wednesday. Hamsho, the World Boxing Council’s No. 1-ranked contender, put the pressure on Minter midway through the bout to narrowly win the fight. The win set up Hamsho for a promised title fight against Marvin Hagler for the undisputed world middleweight title. The No. 2-ranked Minter scored effectively with his right jab throughout the fight, but had trouble containing the more aggressive Hamsho in the later rounds. Judges Chuck Minkler and Hal Miller scored the bout for Hamsho 97-93, while judge Jerry Roth favored Minter by a 96-94 score. The fight started slowly with Minter keeping his distance, content to throw right jabs to offset Hamsho's swarming style. In the fourth round, a good left hok by Hamsho seemed to shake Minter but he responded with effective right and left combinations to keep the New MORE SPORT Brett leads 'star voting NEW YORK (AP) - Third baseman George Brett, who flirted with the .400 mark last year in leading Kansas City Royals to their first pennant, was the top American League vote-getter in the first weekly report on fan balloting for the all-star baseball game, commissioner Bowie Kuhn said Monday. Brett, seeking his sixth consecutive all-star start, collected 309,221 votes for the July 14 mid-season game which will be played at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium this year. Graig Nettles of New York Yankees trails Brett by about 220,000 votes. Besides Brett, four other starters from the 1980 AL allstar lineup are leading at their positions — first baseman Rod Carew of California Angels, catcher Carlton Fisk of Chicago White Sox, and outfielders Reggie Jackson of the Yankees and Fred Lynn of the Angels. New York second baseman Willie Randolph. Milwaukee shortstop Robin Yount and Baltimore outfielder Ken Singleton are the other leaders. Carew, the all-time leading all-star vote-getter, is seeking his 12th straight all-star start. He collected 196,914 votes and holds a 53,733 vote edge over Milwaukee’s Cecil Cooper. Coming our way? The fifth was Minter’s best round of the fight, as he hurt Hamsho with a strong left hook followed by two right hands. In the best action of the bout, both fighters went toe-to-toe until the bell sounded to end the round. Hamsho stepped up the attack in the seventh round, pinning Minter against the ropes at one point and stinging him with two left hooks. Minter, the former middleweight champion, whose tendency to get cut as cost him several fights, was cut on the cheek in the eighth round as Ham-, sho began to dominate the fight. Hamsho ran his won-lost-tied record to 31-1-2 with the win, while Minter fell to 40-7. Minter earned $150,000 for the 10-round main event at Caesars Palace, while Hamsho collected $75,000 for the afternoon’s work. The winner of the bout has been promised a fight with Hagler, probably sometime in October._ TORONTO (CP) - Rod Laver suffered a strained muscle in his left arm midway through the first set and lost 12 of the final 14 games to succumb to a consistent Ken Rosewall 6-4, 6-1 in the final of the $33,000 Legends tennis tournament Sunday. Rosewall, who picked up the $10,000 singles prize, took advantage of Laver’s injury. Laver could not grip his racket properly and only handled three or four balls before losing control. Despite his sore left arm, Laver was able to participate in an all-Australian doubles final afterwards as he combined with Rosewall to defeat Owen Davidson and Roy Emerson 7-6, 7-6. Laver and Rosewall shared $2,000 in prize money while Davidson-Emerson split $1,500. “It was really frustrating,” said Laver, who started off in good fashion before the 2,300 spectators at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club. “I did something to the arm somewhere in the middle of the first set and I couldn’t seem to do anything about it. ‘‘I wanted to put on a good show for the crowd, but as soon as I felt the weak spot I knew that something was wrong. I could no longer hang on to the racket when I made contact with the ball.” The injury appeared to have occurred in either the fourth or fifth game. Laver, who beat American Cliff Richey 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals Saturday, and earned $6,000 today, had built up a 3-0 lead when he fired a backhand cross-court winner in the third game. However. Rosewall, 46, took the next six of seven games as Laver, 42, was only able to hold serve in the seventh game. Rosewall, who beat Laver in the final at Houston in March, noticed the change in the play of his fellow Australian and he began to volley and smash winners with increasing success. ‘‘I didn’t miss too many today,” said Rosewall, who is the oldest player on the over-35 circuit. ‘‘I kept the ball in the play and tried to keep forcing the pace of the game. Back-row start no problem MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) - Mike Mosley charged from the back row and roared to an easy victory Sunday in the Rex Mays 150 Indy-car race at Wisconsin State Fair Park. Mosley, driving the yellow Chevrolet-powered Eagle campaigned by Dan Gurney, took the lead with 45 la ps left on the one-mile oval and wound up beating runner-up Kevin Cogan, an Indy car rookie, to the finish line by 46 seconds — more than one lap. Mario Andretti was third, two laps down, followed by Tom Sneva, three laps behind and Al Unser and Johnny Rutherford, both four laps down. The 34-year-old Mosley, from Fallbrook, Calif., picked up the fifth victory of his Indy-car career and his third triumph at the Milwaukee track. Moslev started 25th on the 26-car grid, but quickly roared through the slower cars to move up among the leaders, climbing to eighth by the 11th lap. The winner averaged 113.838 miles an hour in the 150-lap event ran before a crowd of 27,116.
