Fanning's debut ruined by Phillies PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dan Larson made it an uncomfortable night for Jim Fanning, the new manager of Montreal Expos. Larson pitched a five hitter and outfielder Garry Maddox batted in five with a two-run single and three-run homer as Philadelphia Phillies beat the Expos 10-5. Although the Expos lost, the St. Louis Cardinals were also beaten, losing 4-3 to the Chicago Cubs in 12 innings. St. Louis continues to lead Montreal by one and one-half games in the National League east division pennant race. Fanning was named Tuesday to succeed Dick Williams as manager of the National League team. Fanning, however, had to wait one hour and 22 minutes for rain to abate before the Phillies shattered his debut as a major league manager. Fanning last managed a team in 1962 at Eau Claire, Wis., a farm team of Milwaukee Braves. Larson, recently recalled from Oklahoma City, won his first major league game since defeating Chicago Cubs 8-1 in September, 1979. It was his first complete game since he pitched for Houston in 1977. FIRST SHUTOUT The Phillies got a 3-0lead in the first. Pete Rose, who is only two percentage points behind Pittsburgh’s Bill Mad-iock in the contest for the NL batting title, opened with a single. With two out, Mike Schmidt drew the first of his four walks. Keith Moreland singled home Schmidt and, after Maddox walked to load the bases, Larry Bowa unloaded a two-run single. Montreal got two back in the second on Gary Carter’s 13th home run. a walk, a single by Dan Briggs and a sacrifice fly. Larson settled down after that and the Phillies went on to build a big lead. In the second, Rose and Bake McBride singled. The runners advanced on a fly ball and scored on Maddox’s single to make it 5-2. McBride’s homer in the fourth, his first of the season, made it 6-2, and the Phillies added four in the eighth on Gary Matthews’s solo homer, two walks and a three-run homer by Maddox, his fifth. Today’s game between the Expos and Phillies is on both the CBC’s English (channel 2, cable 3) and French (channel 4, cable 5) at 7:30 p.m. Twin blanks Toronto BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) -Rob Wilfong’s ninth-inning double scored pinch-runner Chuck Baker from second base as Brad Haven pitched his first major league shutout, giving Minnesota Twins a 1-0 decision over Toronto Blue Jays in an American League baseball game Tuesday night. Glen Adams led off the ninth against Dave Stieb with a pinch-hit single to centre. Baker ran for Adams and moved to second when Stieb walked Hosken Powell on four pitches, his first walk of the game. Wilfong then hit his line-drive double down the right-field line to score Baker. Haven, 2*4, gave up four hits while striking out six and walking three. Stieb, 8-10, allowed five hits and struck out six. It was the 17th time Toronto had been shut out this season. The teams entered the game as the worst hitting clubs in the major leagues. Minnesota started the game with a .240 team average and Toronto with .226. Sal Butera picked up the Twins’ first hit in the third when he beat shortstop Alfredo Griffin’s throw to first and moved to second when the ball went into the Twins’ dugout. Butera was later caught in a rundown on Ron Washington’s fielder’s choice grounder. The Twins threatened again in the fourth when Tim Corcoran doubled with two out, but Kent Hrbek flied out to left to end the inning. Cedeno out for scuffle ATLANTA (AP) — First baseman Cesar Cedeno of Houston Astros was ejected Tuesday night from a National League baseball game with Atlanta Braves after going into the stands and engaging in a scuffle with a fan who Cedeno said called him a “killer.” Cedeno had just struck out to end the , first inning when the incident occurred. Several other Houston players went into the stands behind Cedeno to restrain him. After conferring with a uniformed policeman on the scene, the umpires ejected Cedeno from the game. A spokesman for the Braves said both Cedeno and the fan agreed not to file any charges. Cedeno was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and fined $100 in January, 1974, after a 19-year-old woman was shot to death in the Dominican Republic.
