30 - THE CITIZEN, Prince George - Thursday. April 15. 1982 CREATIVITY TIED TO BUDGET LIMITS Production manager often ignored To aid someone who hat broken through Ice, lie flat and reach toward him with a branch or pole. ^--- WINNIPEG I CP) - In the theatre world, it is the actors who take the bows, while those behind the scenes work in the shadows beyond the limelight. Recognition comes indirectly. if at all. for people like Jack Timlock and Ron Kresky, who are involved in the set production of The Importance of Being Earnest. which opens April 22 at Manitoba Theatre Centre. "No audience really understands what a production manager does," Timlock said. "You don't make anything, and they can’t see what you do.” Kresky. MTC’s technical director, said his satisfaction usually comes when a director or actor appreciates his efforts. The Oscar Wilde comedy, a satire of Victoria society, takes place in a London flat. the garden of a country manor and a sun room close to the garden. It is the only MTC play this season to require three different sets. Tackling the problem takes not only creativity, but the ability to stretch a dollar. "Nothing is impossible to do at MTC in facilities and people," Timlock said. "The only bottom line is the dollar, can we afford it?” The job also requires that they wear two hats, with Timlock doubling as set designer and Kresky handling the lighting. It was decided to build the set on a turntable, with the scenes changing as the turntable rotates. "Depending on how it's oriented, you get three different perspectives." Kresky said The set makes extensive use of windows and plants, creating a light, airy mood to mirror the breezy but perceptive sensibilities in the play. But a set. like the drama of the play itself, can be approached from different angles. Timlock built a darker. moodier setting for The Importance of Being Earnest 10 years ago for the Gryphon Theatre in Barrie. Ont. This time he wanted to MOTIFS 'VULGAR, GROTESQUE' Show attracts record crowds do something lighter and more colorful. "I wanted to do scenery, not recreate a museum setting on stage.” Timlock said. "I find Earnest very lyrical and musical, and this is quite a musical set.” From a technical point of view. Earnest is child's play compared to MTC's production of Dracula last season. "That was one of the most technically complicated shows I've every had the Opportunity to work on." Kresky said of the production. which was packed with bats, flames and other special effects. "There were so many effects, so many potential risk factors dealing with actors and special effects." iUPREMt MUFFLE/ FORT GEORGE ALIGNMENT Corner of Oueenswoy ond 969 Hamilton Si by SHIRLEY WON MONTREAL I CP i-The Dinner Party, the controversial feminist sculpture created by artist Judy Chicago that has been shunned by some American museums, is a moveable feast drawing record crowds here. "We were surprised in a way." says Arlette Blan-chet. curator at Montreal’s Musee d'art contemporain where the exhibit has attracted 35.000 visitors since it opened three weeks ago. "It’s the biggest exhibition we've had since the museum opened in 1964. We only get about 60.000 visitors in one year.” The "dinner party" created by the California artist is a symbolic history of women's achievements in Western civilization depicted in a series of 39 place settings on an open triangular table. The plates, flatware, chalices and napkins at each setting rest on an embroidered runner done in the needlework of the women's time and commemorates either mythological or historical figures. Each women is represented by the china-painted plates bearing the controversial motifs — described as vulgar and grotesque by some art critics. The sexual image — an oval-shaped centre that resembles the female vagina or vulva — begins to rise up on the plates of those women in the last century, serving as a metaphor for women's desire to be free Among the 39 females represented are: Hatshep-sut. an Egyptian Pharaoh: Hypatia, a Roman scholar and philospher: Emily Dickinson, poet: novelist Virginia Woolf and Susan B. Anthony, who led the fight for women’s suffrage in the U.S. American artist Georgia O’Keeffe is the only woman symbolized who is still living. The Dinner Party table rests on a large triangular floor made up of 2.300 porcelain tiles, on which are inscribed the names of 999 women of achievement, including several Canadians such as B.C. artist Emily Carr.
