Prince Georgians, like everyone else in Canada, didn’t exactly have their best year in 1982. What with inflation and high interest rates hurting individuals and businesses in the first part of the year and the increasing jobless rate touching many as 1982 progressed, it was a year we’d perhaps choose to forget. But there are always memories: PHOTO 1: Laura Ann Cutway, 17, became Queen Aurora in January and later represented the city in the Miss Canada Pageant. PHOTO 2: Four-year-old Aaron Zimmer of Mackenzie was greeted by his mother, Fern, at Prince George airport after generous donations paid for a trip to a special European clinic that treated his skin disease. PHOTO 3: A B. C. Railway train jumped the tracks alongside the Fraser River in October, spilling carloads of lumber onto the banks. PHOTO 4: Snow — tons and tons of it — put a mighty weight on the roof of Pine Centre, prompting the shopping mall to issue an invitation to anyone with a snow shovel who wanted to make some extra cash to turn out. Hundreds did and the huge roof was cleared in early February. PHOTO 5: But even the snow provided enjoyment for many. Skiers had a wonderland of their own on Tabor Mountain.
