entertainment Th' Citizen Wednesday, August 17, 1983 — 29 There are few country singers who can rightly be called legends, but Wilf Carter is definitely one. This year the 78-year-old cowboy ballade-er is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a recording artist. RCA, the company he signed with in 1933, has marked the occasion by releasing a two-record set containing 24 songs that span his career. Entitled 50 Golden Years, the album opens with the title track, a new Carter composition recorded with some of Toronto’s best studio musicians, none of whom was born when the second cut, My Swiss Moonlight Lullaby, was recorded in 1933. There are a few other new cuts, but mostly the album is a retrospective of his long, distinguished career, and the songs present a good cross-section of Carter’s music over the last five decades. Highlights include The Capture of Albert Johnson, You Are My Sunshine, The Old Rugged Cross, When It’s Springtime in the Rockies, I want to Be a Cowgirl’s Sweetheart, There’s a Bluebird on Your Window Sill. My Old Canadian Home, The Fate of Old Strawberry Roan and When it’s Apple Country road Written for CI* Hy Duvc Mulholland er defeated by life’s trials. Her mood ranges from sentimentality on My Old Yellow Car to world weariness on Too Many Miles to downright raunchiness on You Got It Cornin’ Tonight. Good country. 'MOVIE A LOSER' Audience shouldn't be there Blossom Time in Annapolis Valley. Some songs were recorded with Carter solo; other feature backup musicians. Inside the attractive fold-out album jacket, there are photos illustrating his career, plus a history of his life in point form. It’s unfortunate RCA didn’t include recording dates of the selections, which would have helped the listener place each in perspective. As a singer, Carter has only an adequate voice, although as his producer, Jack Feeney, says in the liner notes: “Wilf’s voice is still strong and steady and a shade lower, which serves to enhance the quality of his performance.” While that’s true, the real magic to Carter’s singing is his glowing, warm personality that comes through every note. He thoroughly enjoys each song, most of which were written and performed in the traditional style before country and folk music went their separate ways. It’s not likely you’ll hear much of this album on “Canadian” country radio, because it won't fit the American sound of today’s stations, but for many country fans 50 Golden Years is an essential collector’s item. Dream Baby; Lacy J. Dalton (Columbia Records) This is Lacy J. Dalton’s fifth album and it shows how she has matured in the studio during the past three years. She and producer Billy Sherrill have selected 10 well-written songs with imaginative lyrics and appealing melodies. Dalton’s throaty, coun-try-blues contralto has a slight tremelo that suggests a strong character slightly bowed, but nev- After a long wait, Carroll liaker has finally released her first single on Tembo Records. It’s the Wanda Jackson classic, Right or Wrong. Party With The Rovers is the name of a new television variety series the group will unveil this fall. The program, being produced by Ontario’s Global Network, will be shown on several stations across Canada. Two of The Rovers’s guests will be Tom T. Hall and Ray Stevens, both of whom have new albums scheduled for release this month. . . . Also scheduled for August release is a new album from The Kendalls. The movie showing at Plaza 400 Cinema One is a 3-D loss, which means its a loser any way you look at it. The quality of this offering deserves a return message from The Audience Who Wasn’t There. The 3-D, gave the theatre people a bit of trouble trying to get it in focus and in full-frame. But the technical problems were not the real trouble. This must be an example of a movie being put together by committe because it had story lines that just didn’t go anywhere. The plot is about a young couple being drawn into international intrigue over a formula which will make a person disappear. Both the U.S. and thei Tnnct Gttryt rA*t
